The Neighborhood

One of Atlanta’s most desirable neighborhoods in the late 19th century before falling into disrepair in the 1960s, the Old Fourth Ward is also where Martin Luther King, Jr., grew up (you can visit his boyhood home) and honed his preaching style, delivering sermons at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

In recent years, the “O4W” has become a striking symbol of intelligent gentrification in the Georgia capital, a place where abandoned warehouses are being converted to lofts and small businesses are thriving–while the authentic flavor of this historic area remains preserved.

Other Things to Note

Here are ten reasons to love this ever evolving neighborhood:

1. Ponce City Market. Housed in the former Sears, Roebuck & Company building, this mixed-use development is poised to become the city’s next hot spot for eating, shopping, working, and living. Modeled after Chelsea Market in New York City, Ponce City Market has already lined up top-shelf retail and restaurants to fill the massive space.

2. The Atlanta Streetcar. Atlanta’s public transportation system isn’t up to par with most major metropolises in America, but the Atlanta Streetcar is a good start toward getting it there. It’s also rekindling a link with the city’s past, when electric streetcars connected the community. The first phase of the project links the MLK National Historic Site with Centennial Olympic Park, where further transfers can be made at the MARTA rail and bus lines.

3. The BeltLine. It started with a Georgia Tech graduate student’s proposal to transform outmoded railroad tracks line into a walking and cycling path through Atlanta. Now, the BeltLine is becoming a reality. The most commonly used section is the Eastside Trail between Piedmont Park and Irwin Street, which goes past Ponce City Market. This area is home to frequent art installations, as well as restaurants with open-air seating.

4. Epic Southern Brunch. Sunday brunch is one of the things at which the South excels, and no neighborhood does it better than the Old Fourth Ward. Head to Parish or Two Urban Licks, where you can stuff your face with eggs Benedict while watching the drama unfold on the BeltLine below. Highland Bakery is the ultimate in decadence, with French toast as big as your head, while diner-chic Home Grown, on the border of Reynoldstown, serves up the best biscuits in town paired with breakfast eggs and meats or vegan fare.

5. Edgewood Avenue Nightlife. Atlanta’s young and hip used to make a beeline for Buckhead to wet their whistles, but Edgewood Avenue is fast becoming the place to find affordable dive bars with authentic ATL edge. Perhaps the best example is Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium (shortened to Church), where guests can people-watch or play table tennis while wearing choir robes. Mother is another popular bar, as is Joystick, where you can play your favorite childhood arcade games while sipping craft beers.

6. Jackson Street Bridge. Fans of The Walking Dead will immediately recognize the stretch over Freedom Parkway from the opening sequence of the show when Rick Grimes enters the abandoned city on horseback. The unassuming Jackson Street Bridge is frequently used as a backdrop for amateur photo shoots for fans and those looking for the best view of the skyline at all hours.

7. Street Art. Graffiti used to be an urban scourge; now it’s being embraced as a means of transforming otherwise drab brick buildings into works of art. This is especially true in the Old Fourth Ward, with the annual Living Walls, the City Speaks conference bringing in artists from all over the U.S. to beautify streets like Edgewood Avenue, Carroll Street, and Krog Street Tunnel.

8. Local Markets. Sweet Auburn Curb Market, established in the aftermath of the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917, is where generations of locals have gone to purchase fresh food. Dozens of restaurant stalls–notably Bell Street Burritos, Arepa Mia, and Grindhouse Killer Burgers–have also opened up. The Freedom Farmers Market takes a more traditional approach, setting up Saturdays in the parking lot of the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum (one of Georgia’s native sons). Pick up produce and meats from local farmers, as well as baked goods, fresh pasta, and ready-to-eat fare.

9. History: The Old Fourth Ward is one of Atlanta’s oldest areas. That’s why developers are taking pains to preserve that heritage while giving historical–but dilapidated–buildings new identities in the modern age. Ponce City Market is a prime example of this, as is the Masquerade, a popular indoor-outdoor music venue that occupies the old Dupre Excelsior Mill complex. Get a taste of what the neighborhood looked like before gentrification began in full force by touring the Sweet Auburn Historic District.

10. Community Pride. Most ATL-ians are proud of their city, but O4W residents take even greater pride in their neighborhood. They come out to support events like the Georgia Marathon, which passes through the area, with pom-poms and signs. They also throw a great party, with festivals such as the Old Fourth Ward Arts Festival, Sweet Auburn Springfest, and One Musicfest.

A bit disappointed
While there is much about the property that was quite lovely, including its location and the spaciousness of the bungalow, we were a bit disappointed during our recent stay. First there was trouble getting in touch with the host to change the reservation time frame despite (the request to change the start date by a day was made several weeks in advance but took several reminders before I got a response). They did then respond more quickly when I inquired about an additional person joining our party. Arrival was very easy and the bungalow was clean, but tired looking in many of the rooms. Draws in bedside tables were full of random screws and other hardware, the carpet in the living room had odd stains and didn’t look clean, there was only one dish towel for the kitchen and no drain plug for the tub. None of the issues were huge, but made our stay a little less smooth. Additionally the outdoor space when we arrived was not inviting as it was covered in leaves and debris. On Thursday a lawn crew came at 5pm and were there for several hours making quite a bit of noise. While we understand that these things run on a schedule would have been helpful to at least have some heads up as it made it difficult to get the babies to sleep with the starting and stopping of noise. The proximity to Krog and the Beltline is wonderful and it was also easy to get to downtown for the conference I was attending.

Great Property and Location
The house was exactly as advertised. It has a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and comfortable and plentiful seating in the living room. It is within blocks of the beltline, so you can walk almost anywhere. It also has off-street parking, which is extremely important in this part of town.

Wheelchair accessibility
We did enjoy our stay, being in close proximity to the beltline, restaurants etc. was convenient and nice. However, the listing states that it’s wheelchair accessible (which is exactly what we were looking for as 2 in our party use wheelchairs), but was not as wheelchair friendly as we were hoping. Although it worked ok and the owner came by to move the washer and dryer around in the laundry room which was where the wheelchair access was, it was still a bit challenging for the members of our party to navigate through a narrow space to get in and out but certainly appreciated and helped a bit. The key pad to enter was on the front door up some stairs so not an option for anyone but an able-bodied person to access. Adding one to the side door where the ramp is would be helpful as well as inclusive.

Graduation weekend
Everything was exactly as described. Kitchen was well appointed and had all we needed. Living room furniture was very comfortable as were the beds. Appreciated the extra blanket! Restaurants within walking distance as well as our daughter’s apartment in Olde Fourth Ward. It was a really great place to relax as we attended graduation at Emory Med School. Short drive to campus as well as other attractions such as the Jimmy Carter museum.

Guys get together
Four of us, old friends and all in our 50s rented the property because we were seeing a band for 2 nights close to the property. We were informed the band cancelled because of Covid issue. We went anyway and found lots to do in close proximity to the house. The Beltline was awesome, and right up the street. House was well equipped and clean with good space for 4 guys.

Great location space for family
We enjoyed our stay in Old Fourth Ward over New years weekend. The house was a great set up for our family of five. It was clean and kitchen was well equipped to fix meals during our stay. Also had great proximity to lots of food/coffee and shopping options just a short walk away. It was very convenient to get downtown too.

Not the same condition as last year
We stayed at this property last year & loved it, so I booked it again. However, the condition has deteriorated. Someone had ripped the towel bars & toilet paper holder off the wall in the second bathroom, & had not been replaced (no hooks on the back of the door either). Some kitchen items such as measuring cups & spoons, salt & pepper, dish towels & sponges were absent (had been there last year) & I had to go out the next AM & purchase them. (Only a filthy sponge had been left in the kitchen). A hinge on the cabinet door under the sink is broken & there is a dark stain on the carpet in the family room. On the positive side, the management was very quick to respond to the fact that we didn't have enough towels, had new batteries for the Nest thermostat, & the fact that the hose from the dryer to the outside vent had fallen off & needed to be put back on for safety reasons. The location for the house is fabulous with good parking space and good working appliances. However, it needs a makeover since it is showing a lot of wear & tear.
