Why the unique layout? Older homes were built with connecting rooms: the ability to close doors between rooms also helped heat and cool the home—no sense wasting energy in rooms weren't being used. Bandit's Bungalow was built in the late 1800s (and moved to Cambridge from Holland Island [fascinating history to read up on] in the early 1900s!), utilizing this architecture.
