peaceful retreat
My family had an absolute blast during our visit, making treasured memories in the embrace of nature. The ambiance was serene and is ideal for unwinding. We love the river, cooking s'mores at the fire pit, & playing at the yard. Everything is provided at Barney's retreat. All you need to bring is food. The not-so-favorite of ours is the hot tub because it appears not so clean and the water is a bit cloudy. Overall, Barney's Retreat is a perfect retreat for rejuvinating the mind and soul.

Mostly Okay.
I scheduled this trip for a short getaway with my spouse and parents. I sought out a property with a hot tub, that was along the Shenandoah River close enough to the Shenandoah NP, and was dog-friendly. The property was kind enough to allow us to have a second dog for an additional fee above their advertised 1 dog limit. Comms were smooth. The property was not super clean but manageable. I'll add, that I communicated with the property management team and they were attentive to addressing the concerns though were dismissive of the issues. The ceiling has dust and spiderwebs hanging throughout; overhead lights included. There was a wolf spider nest that spanned a couple of feet in the bathroom above the door. There was cookware and dishware that needed to be washed before use, the blender had a black grime on its button panel. The house water filter was in obvious need of replacement (My father and I are plumbers). I needed to clean the toilet when I arrived. The bathroom walls need cleaning as well. Our chief issue was the state of the hot tub. The water was cloudy to the point that you could not see the bottom of it and the interior of the cover had a green/brown algae/mold film on it. The property managers were amicable to our request for a refund of the cleaning fee and hot tub charge. Beyond the tub, spiders, and cleaning need, the property was fine and the location is great. I'd recommend the property and would stay again if the issues fielded were handled.

A weekend away
We loved it… until we checked out the hot tub! It was unusable. Needed complete cleaning with a water change. I sent an email with pics to the property mgr and they offered to send someone over but we declined knowing the time needed to resolve the issue. We enjoyed the indoor fireplace as well as the fire pit outside. We’d like to go back in nicer weather and clean hot tub!!

I could list everything that was wrong but instead the hot tub was great...the river was beautiful. Unfortunately, my second night was cut short by wind storm cutting electric. It is what it says but it needs some work.

Great Stay!
We had a great stay at Barney’s Retreat. It was the perfect size for 2 and close to attractions. The house was clean and had everything you needed. The screened porch and fire pit were definitely a plus. It was just a little too cold for the hot tub. Overall I would definitely rent this house again and would recommend to others.

Private, beautiful and pristine
The pictures online don't represent Barney's retreat accurately. The river is literally 2 feet from the firepit. There is a nice small fishing pier on the property that easily fits 2 lawn chairs. 2 huge picnic tables in the yard and one on the screen porch. The jacuzzi is also on the screen porch. 2 bedrooms. The mattresses were great in both. The only minor complaints were that we arrived in the dark and it took a few passes to find it because the sign was not lit and the house number was not seen by the street like the other properties. Secondly, I am a serious coffee drinker and the pod coffee maker took a few times to get the hang of. Other than that, it was exactly as advertised and we really enjoyed it !

Nice secluded house
If you want seclusion this is the right house to rent. Beautiful views. I enjoyed relaxing by the fire in front of the river. Very quiet. The house could have been a little cleaner. There was dust webs on the ceiling. We encountered quite a few spiders. We had to kill 3 or 4 upon arriving and there wasn’t any bug spray. This would not prevent me from staying again as I’m aware this comes with being in the woods.

Located 20 minutes from Luray down a country road that becomes gravel. Most neighbors are RV campers. View and access to river is perfect. House is very old, interior has been nicely remodeled but bathroom is crazy small, like a cruise ship. Great for just 1-3 people

Great little getaway spot
We enjoyed our stay at Barney’s Retreat. Most essential housing items were supplied and the view and river accessibility can’t be beat! The only drawbacks for us were that the hot tub smelled strongly of mildew and there was only one small skillet in the cabin so eggs and such had to be cooked one at a time. Otherwise we were very pleased and would definitely recommend!

My goal was solitude and this cabin certainly delivers. 4 days with me and the dogs was great to unwind and enjoy.some peace and quiet. When I got snowed in the manager sent her husband down in his 4x4 to rescue the city boy. Thanks a million. Great people with good hearts.

Barney's Retreat is a gem!
The cabin was tidy, comfortable and the amenities were well thought out. The screened porch with ceiling fans, outdoor picnic table, fire pit seating and little river deck provide a great many options for enjoying the river and views. Access to get in the river itself was easy unless you are not agile. We loved our stay!

Perfect Weekend Getaway
This cabin provided the perfect location for a quick weekend getaway for our family. We really enjoyed the outdoor amenities (easy entry to the river, fire pit, hammock, fishing platform, screened porch, plenty of outdoor seating options), and the inside of the cabin was super cozy and all the space we needed for a family of 4. The outdoor views of the mountains over the river were fantastic, and we were graced by clear nights and a full moon to really enjoy the beauty of the Shenandoah. We were prepared for the smell of the well water, so that wasn't a surprise, and it was something you just got used to and not a hindrance to our enjoyment of the place. It was so quiet and peaceful that we were sad to leave but would definitely rent this cabin again! Everyone had a lovely time.

Loved this place!!! It said we needed to bring a bunch of extra stuff like coffee and coffee maker but they had not only that stuff but seriously anything you could imagine… not to mention a perfect location… right on the river and secluded enough for privacy but not exactly in the middle of nowhere. We will DEFINITELY be back

It Was Not The Best Place to Stay for the $ We paid
We made it work because we already paid for it, but if were able to get a refund and not stayed, we would have in a heartbeat. The house smelled so bad, like sewage, rotten eggs, and wet dog hair. There is no exhaust fan in the whole house, so you couldn’t get the smell out. We aired the house as best we can with a portable fan we found in the house for 5 hours when we got there, and all day everyday when we were there. We cleaned the house of dog fur and wet dog smell of the couches the best we can. Dog fur was EVERYWHERE, on all the furniture, carpets, rugs, towels, flooring, and bedding. Every night our socks was caked in so much fur. A few of us tried to take showers in the very small bathroom, but the rotten smell of the shower water made them throw up, so the rest of us didn’t take a shower and we used bottled water that we brought for all our water needed. And if you are over 6’3” tall and 270 lbs, the shower stall is not comfortable. There is no cable TV, only Netflix and YouTube. You couldn’t watch the news or your regular tv shows. And fishing was not that great. The water in that part of the river is on average 1-2 feet deep. We only caught small sun fish and bass. Kids were disappointed about that. A few good things about the place is that the kitchen met our cooking needs, AC is nice and cold, back yard is awesome and the house is really close to the river.

New Listing with Potential
The owners have taken a number of steps to prepare this home for renters. There is a new A/C, charcoal grill, concrete canoe launch, and small wooden platform that overlooks the river. Also, some nice touches like supplies for smores, a couple of bottles of wine, and a station with dog supplies. Laura the woman that Shenandoah Realty assigned to manage the house during my visit was wonderful. I cannot extend this compliment to all of the staff that I communicated with at Shenandoah Realty. When I arrived the sheets, towels, and bathroom appeared to fresh and clean. The benches of the main table in the kitchen had crumbs, the side table in the living room had a sticky substance, the kitchen light switch was filthy, and there was water with a film on top in the dog dish from the prior occupants. At the bottom of the canoe launch, there were five-gallon Home Depot buckets and pieces of 4 x 4 lumber randomly sitting in the river. When I asked I was told this debris was from the old dock and the plan was to remove it. Once it is cleaned up the river should be lovely. Another small disappointment was when I hopped into bed the first night and grabbed the remote I discovered it had not been set up and could not be without the owner's Roku account information. Laura came the next day in the afternoon and set up the remote. In the post, they mention a "SLIGHT" sulfur smell in the water. After my experience, I find this statement misleading. After relaxing the first evening I took a shower. I cannot describe how bad the smell was that filled the entire cabin. To me, it did not really smell like rotten eggs but more like sewage (either way very stinky). The smell lingered and took almost three hours to dissipate. This was my biggest disappointment, I just could not bring myself to shower here again. I went home after staying only one night. To make an informed decision you should also know you will need to travel on unpaved surfaces to get to this location including a half-mile of a privately maintained gravel road. Also, count on having no reception! I was able to make calls using Messenger on the Wifi.
