Explore the historic landmarks, tidal pools, surf breaks and buzzing dining and entertainment zones of a rugged peninsula where California began.

Blessed with stunning natural beauty and a fascinating history, Point Loma is one of the many must-visit districts of San Diego. Discover significant monuments, restaurants, galleries, leafy neighborhoods and waterfront parks spread across a hilly peninsula. Point Loma is the place where European explorers first landed in California and is often considered to be the birthplace of the state.

Head to Cabrillo National Monument to stand at the spot where Spanish sailor Juan Cabrillo arrived with his crew in 1542. The explorer’s story comes to life via exhibits at the Cabrillo National Monument Visitor Center. Enjoy sweeping sea views along the monument’s trails and at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Spot marine life at the Point Loma Tidal Pools.

Pause for reflection at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, the burial site of fallen soldiers of the United States Armed Forces. The coastal Sunset Cliffs neighborhood is great for beachgoers, nature lovers and surfers. Marvel at dramatic cliffs and sea caves and watch cliff divers at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Surfers ride rolling Pacific waves at Luscomb’s Point and anglers fish from the rocks at Osprey Point.

On the bayside, boutiques, pubs and seafood restaurants line the palm-shaded streets and waterfront of Point Loma Marina. Go sport fishing and join year-round whale-watching tours. Find brewpubs and gourmet food at Liberty Station. This one-time U.S. Navy training center has about 50 galleries and museums, including the San Diego Comic Art Gallery and Women’s Museum of California.

Don’t miss the cool nautical vibe of Shelter Island. Shoreline Park is great for picnics and views of the downtown skyline. Stroll along the park’s promenade to see the fishing-inspired Tunaman’s Memorial and Friendship Bell, which commemorates the amity between San Diego and Yokohama. Humphreys Concerts by the Bay is a music series held on the island from April to November.

The attractions of Point Loma are within a 30-minute drive of Downtown San Diego. Rent a car or arrange transportation to reach Cabrillo National Monument.
