Cottage near Shenandoah NP Old Rag and White Oak Canyon

We are located in the heart of Madison County on scenic route 231 near Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon in Shenandoah National Park.
This charming cottage sits on a half-acre and is part of a 120-acre working farm. We have miles of walking paths or sit by the pond and enjoy a glass of wine or craft beer from one of our locals; Shotwell Run Brewery, Blue Quartz, DuCard or Revalation vineyards.
Our little farm store offers Animal Welfare Approved meats, cheeses, eggs, seasonal fruits and veggies and locally made products.
The cottage was a local sawmill when it was built back in the 1950s. This one-bedroom cottage has a built-in King size bed with luxurious linens, a ceiling fan and TV with DVD player. The living room has an exposed heart pine ceiling, small office area with Wi-Fi, landline telephone, full size memory foam leather futon with linens, which is ideal for one adult or children, ceiling fan, large screen TV and DVD player with lots of DVDs to choose from, dining table, small free library as well as board games. Outdoors you can enjoy an evening at the firepit overlooking pastural and mountain views, sit on the covered porch or cook up something on the charcoal grill. You have access to our farm pond, trails, the farm store and barns, all accessible by vehicle just down the road.

Farm Experiences: Please contact us for a farm tour or if you would like to visit our farm store. We offer our Animal Welfare Approved Pork, Beef, Chicken, Eggs and Lamb as well as seasonal produce, local soaps, Shenandoah National Park maps and souvenirs, local art and essential camping gear.
Sampler baskets are available for delivery to your cottage or pickup at the farm. Our breakfast basket, which includes AWA Farm Eggs, AWA Pork or Lamb Sausage, biscuit mix, local jam and local roasted coffee is a big hit for overnight guest.

Access to our river property located on a stocked trout stream is approximately 3 miles from the cottage. Just ask for a map.

We are pet friendly but do require a pet fee. We ask that pets remain on a leash when at the cottage to prevent chasing of our neighbors' cats or horses. It is also required when on the farm to prevent any chasing of farm animals including, ducks, chickens, goats, sheep, cows, pigs and cats. Please note that we have farm dogs on the property who are not leashed but they do not visit the cottage.

Our cottage property is neighbored by a lovely small horse farm. The horses sometimes come say hello over the fence. Please do not touch or feed the horses or trespass over the fence.

Please note that Madison County and the area surrounding area including Shenandoah National Park has limited cell phone service and that high-speed internet is not an option in our area. Most of our guests with AT&T or Verizon will get one to two bars at the cottage. Our Wi-Fi is perfect for checking email or searching the internet, but our satellite is too slow for video or large downloads (doing this will make the internet speed even slower for the next person). Please take this time to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors!

Please note that the cottage is located in the country! All of our homes are on well water and many homes in the area have iron, sulfur and other elements in the drinking water.

Bugs and other pests:
If you leave food on the counter or another mess in the kitchen, you might get a visit from an ant or mouse.
If you leave food outside unattended you may get a visit from a raccoon, possum, a neighbor's dog or even a bear.
If you leave the doors or windows open (without screens) you will likely get stink bugs, lady bugs, flies, spiders, etc.
If you leave the lights off at night, you'll likely see fireflies lighting up the night sky during the summer.

The lower parking lot for Shenandoah National Park (SNP) White Oak Canyon is 10 miles down lovely back roads. The parking lot for SNP Old Rag Mountain is 8 miles away and for the real adventurous a great dirt backroad to travel by if you want to travel by bike.
Shotwell Run Brewery and Blue Quartz Winery are a half mile down the road, DuCard, Sharp Rock and Revalation Vineyards are 6 miles. Bald Top Brewing is 9.5, Early Mountain and Prince Michel Vineyard are about 12 miles away. I can give you maps of nice driving tours down backroads.
Sperryville is 13 miles to the North which has some great restaurant, shops and a small grocery store. Madison is 8 miles to the South and has a Foodlion, Dollar General, 24 hour 7-11, gas stations, fast food and a few restaurants.
Looking for a great trout fishing spot? Our river property is 3 miles to the south on the Robinson River near Criglersville and a great gallery called The Possum Store, which has live music on the weekends. The Hughes River is 5 miles to the north and the Rose is 5 miles to the west, access to The Rapidan Wildlife Management Area and the Rapidan River, made famous by President Hoover, is 5 miles. Graves Mountain Lodge is 6 miles down the road. You can ride horses, attend their summer Bluegrass Festival, Fall Apple Festival or eat country style at one of their buffets, they also have a country store in Syria. Looking for some simple provisions, a great BBQ or ice cream, visit the Little Country Store just 3 miles down the road!

Please note Old Rag Mountain Trail require a permit to hike from March-November. This permit is $2 and limits the trail to 800 people per day. You must reserve online. 400 tickets are release 30 days in advanced and the other 400 five days in advance. Please see SNP website for additional info and tickets.

Had a great time & unplugged!
We had a great time at the sawmill cottage! Jen was a wonderful host and even gave us a tour of her farm, highly recommend! The cottage was clean and bed was comfortable. Absolutely no cell service or television, and that gave us some time to spend unplugged and play board games and watch dvds together!! Campfire area is awesome as well. Loved it, thanks Jen for the experience and helping us with maps of the area!

A perfect retreat for some R&R
If you are looking for peace and quiet in a location near tons of hiking, wineries, breweries, and farms, stay here! Jen was a perfect host and the cottage is gorgeous. All of the appliances are new, the house itself is out of a magazine, and the bed is super comfortable. We loved that there is a washer and dryer, a perfect porch, a fire pit, games, books, tv, everything. We can't wait to visit again!

Awesome getaway. The mountains were beautiful and the house was comfy and cozy. My only concern was that we ended up arriving after dark and there were no lights on.

Loved this cottage!
Beautiful cottage in lovely Virginia! The cottage is well made, beautifully decorated and charming. Has everything for a comfortable stay. Received a tour of the farm and enjoyed their farm-fresh eggs and bacon all week. Owner was very helpful with nearby attractions and awesome hikes. Also really enjoyed the nearby Etlan store for delicious BBQ, salads and pizza! Several vineyards and brewery’s nearby. Great stay! Thank you!

Great place - problems, though
Loved the place and the location near the mountains. We thoroughly enjoyed the coziness of the cabin and exploring Sperryville's cafes, artist establishments, and walking trails. There were 4 problems: 1. there was no extra toilet paper (nor kleenex nor paper towels) - a special problem when you discover this while on the toilet; 2. we did not receive check-in instructions (weren't expecting to need any, thinking the host was on site), so couldn't get in without the help of the neighbor who just happened to know the owner (turns out the check-in info had gone to my trash folder, but couldn't have retrieved it on site because of lack of cell service); 3. the coffee maker was deeply disgusting, so we cleaned it with baking soda and vinegar; 4. the bed, as others have mentioned, rolls you into your partner - so you better like them. It is also difficult for a short person to climb on the bed because the foam topper hangs off the end.

Great little cottage
My wife and I got reservations at Three Blacksmiths in Sperryville for her birthday. The Sawmill Cottage was the perfect place for our long weekend. The cottage was exceptionally clean and exactly as described. Even though there are neighbors and a somewhat busy road right in front of the house, the cottage feels very secluded and private. It is in the perfect location for checking out Madison, Sperryville and other cool little towns in the area. We would definitely stay here again if we get the chance.

Country Getaway
Lovely country getaway for our 4 day holiday. Cozy cabin near our friends and close to many hikes in Shanandoah National Park. Comfortable bed, updated kitchen and TV. Enough comforts to be a getaway yet with very limited cell and internet that helps your family talking together and off the internet and texting. King bed fits very snugly into the 1 bedroom. Nice add on is the breakfast basket from owner. Would stay here again.

Perfect Getaway
Everything was great. The host was super nice, the cottage was cute and cozy and it had everything you would need. The only thing I had difficulties with was that extremely soft bed. My husband liked it, but I couldn't sleep in it. Fortunately there was already a solution - I slept on the futon 😉 We loved our stay and we would love to come back some time.

Nice getaway
We had a great time staying at this little cottage, and we loved visiting the farm! Super cute house, convenient to nearby towns and Old Rag. The furniture wasn't very comfortable, and the bed was really difficult to get in and out of with the super squishy mattress topper. Tough to get comfy after 8 hours of hiking. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay!

Perfect location and all the amenities
Absolutely beautiful home and property. We didn’t have the sun and warm weather like I had hoped however the house was beautiful and had all the amenities that you need for a relaxing and peaceful stay. The main attraction for my son and I was sitting out by the fire pit. Which we were able to do 2 nights out of our stay. Sitting out by the fire listening to nature, star gazing and enjoying a drink was the perfect way to end the day of hiking and adventures. We will be back to hike Old Rags trail again to get a better view from the peak since it was overcast the day we went. Plus if you like rock scramble like we do that’s the best we have ever done. I would definitely recommend staying here since it’s so close and beautiful. Looking forward to staying here the next time we are down hiking.

Anniversary weekend - PERFECT
My wife and I spent two nights in this lovely cottage to celebrate our 18th anniversary, everything was just perfect. The house was just the right size for her and I and had everything needed for the weekend stay. The cottage was spacious with a wonderful layout. The outdoor areas of the property were perfect for relaxing in the evening and breakfast in the morning. The location of the cottage was again perfect, few miles from excellent hiking trails, fresh produce stands & markets, and many wineries. The owner was super nice and accommodating, made the stay even better. We will definitely be staying here again.
