Explore serene surroundings on a visit to Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens (aka RHS Garden Harlow Carr). Set at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, this 68 acre (27.5 hectare) garden showcases a diverse collection of flourishing landscapes.
Once a royal hunting ground and later a 19th-century spa, Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens opened as a public attraction in 1950. Stroll along trails to themed gardens, discover child-friendly entertainment and relax at teahouses.
Visitors come to the gardens to enjoy leisurely strolls, spend a fun day with the family and gather inspiration for their own gardens. Wander through the Woodland in springtime to see blankets of bluebells and rhododendrons, among other wildflowers. Bridges and waterfalls decorate the Streamside, one of the country’s longest stream gardens. Marvel at the vivid colors of the flowers, herbaceous plants that line the water’s edge.
Get advice on growing and caring for fruits, herbs and vegetables in the Kitchen Garden. Learn about alpine plants in the glass Alpine House and then admire the top-down view of the woodland. The hedgehog-themed garden offers tips on how to create friendly habitats for hedgehogs.
Let the children run around at the wooden playground. It features treehouses, rope bridges and a slide that resembles the Loch Ness Monster. Guide your way to the center of the log maze. An on-site cafe offers a range of sweet and savory snacks.
Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens is a 10-minute drive from central Harrogate. Free parking is available outside the main entrance. If you are feeling energetic then walk the 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from the town center. A trail starts at Valley Gardens and then continues through a wooded area to the gardens. Plan about 40 minutes for the walk.
The gardens open daily, except for Christmas Day. There’s an admission fee, with discounts for children and families. Guided tours of the gardens are available for a fee and take place every Tuesday morning. Visit the gardens’s official website for more information.
