Be introduced to a special school of Buddhist teaching in this temple that was built more than 500 years ago.

The Kotokuji Temple is a peaceful place where Pure Land Buddhism is practiced. More accessible than other forms of the religion, Pure Land features less chanting and simpler rituals, with the addition of some mysticism. Visit Kotokuji Temple, built in 1471, to learn the details of the Pure Land teachings and understand the path to enlightenment.

The temple is located in a peaceful setting away from major residential and commercial development. Notice the wall of round rocks and short flight of stairs leading from the street to a dark wooden gate. Enter the courtyard and face the simple temple with a door of warm wood under a curved roof. Step inside to see the golden Amitabha Buddha.

In addition to its spiritual function, Kotokuji Temple has special artistic appeal, featuring a collection of prints from Shiko Munakata. The woodcut artist lived in Toyama after World War II, gaining international recognition as he developed great skill and a unique style. He created a workshop in the temple buildings. Be sure to see Munakata’s noted masterpieces inside, six sliding screens decorated with pine trees.

Kotokuji Temple is open daily except on Wednesdays and during yearend holidays. There is a general admission fee. Visit in April when the temple commemorates the death of Rennyo Shonin with exhibits of his sayings and treasured items. Rennyo’s teachings were important in growing Pure Land Buddhism in Japan.

Find the Kotokuji Temple in the northwestern part of Nanto. Drive here in 15 minutes from central Nanto. Free parking is available. Alternatively, take a train to JR Fukumitsu Station and walk in 20 minutes. Look for a Munakata print of Rennyo as signage in front of the rock wall. Gaze across the rice fields of the farming area surrounding the temple and the mountains that inspired some of Munakata’s work. Venture a few miles west to stroll through a quiet wooded area.
