Project Explorer is an exciting new AI travel assistant feature developed by EG Labs from Expedia Group. Powered by OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology, Project Explorer helps you discover travel ideas using prompts and plan your itinerary in seconds, including hotels, and activity recommendations. EG Labs is the new forum for technological innovation at Expedia Group. Its mission is to come up with innovative solutions to the challenges faced by the travel industry and to provide new and improved products and services for the clients and users of Expedia Group platforms.
How our AI Travel Tool works
We'll take the hassle out of planning trips so you can focus on enjoying your experience instead of worrying about what to ask and consider. Here's how it works:
By tapping or entering the relevant keywords, our system can communicate with ChatGPT who will curate everything you need to know for each destination.
When hearting an activity or hotel, the item will be saved in the top right corner of your Trip Planner. When you’re done exploring, you can access all saved items in the bottom navigation bar of your phone under the Trips section.
Each request will be compared against our internal data and match recommendations to Expedia-based properties and activities.
You can also view your past explorations from the Project Explorer starting page by clicking "Previous Explorations" at the bottom of the page. We will save your last 10 destinations.

How do I access Project Explorer?
Click here to fill out the form and gain access to the experiment. Upon completion, tap the link from your mobile device or scan the QR code to access your new AI travel assistant. You must have an iOS device, have the Expedia app downloaded, and be signed in for it to work.
What platforms and countries are Expedia's AI travel assistant available in?
This feature is only available on iOS on the Expedia app in the US and coming soon for all users who have English set as your primary language on your phone.
Where are my hotels and activities saved?
Your hotels and activities are saved in the top right corner in your Trip Planner.
Can I come back and view my past explorations?
Yes, if you scan the QR code again, at the bottom of the opening screen you will be able to access all your explorations with your artificial intelligence travel agent under "Previous Explorations" if you had already tapped into the destination at least once prior.
What If I already know where I'm going?
That's great! We recommend typing in the name of the city in the location field. The city should appear as a choice on the next page. To get the best results, be sure to add in your travel interests so we can put together a great list of activities and an itinerary for you. Example: If you wanted to explore Paris, you'd type in either "Paris" or "Paris" + "France" in the location field.
What if I don't see information about a city and I want to find out more?
At the bottom of the "About" tab we have a chatbot powered by Open AI. You can use it to get an answer to virtually any travel question you have about a destination, point of interest, and more.

An AI travel assistant is particularly helpful in the planning stage of your vacation. What is the technology behind our Generative AI travel functionality?
The technology behind Expedia's new AI travel assistant is OpenAI. We leverage LLM (Large Language Models) from OpenAI to understand and process large amount of information and we have already applied learnings from our Open AI app integration launched in April 2023. We are constantly improving and innovating within the world of travel technology.
