Sus Picnic Area is a glorious place for a snack and some contemplation in the heart of Saguaro National Park West. The pretty area lies in the midst of glorious tree-like saguaro cacti of all different heights and forms. Stop for a break in this serene and picturesque area and have a picnic lunch at a table dating back to the 1930s.
Cool down in the shade of a rare gabled shelter in the desert. Barbecue a meal on one of the grills in the picnic area. The open-air site consists of several clusters of tables, where families and friends can gather for a snack. Enjoy stunning views of the surrounding saguaro forest and look as far as the mountains in the distance. Admire the impressive rock formations to the east, with Wasson Peak rising just beyond the hills.
Follow the Bajada Wash Trail, which leads east from this picnic site to the Valley View Overlook Trail and the Hugh Norris Trailhead. Note that the path runs for 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) and is fairly flat. You’ll spot all types of dry shrubs and wildflowers beside the cacti making up this arid terrain. Bring enough water and wear a hat for these trails, where you’ll find little shelter from the baking sun above.
Note that much of the picnic site was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Make use of the bathroom facilities and amenities.
Find Sus Picnic Area at the western edge of Saguaro National Park West. Drive west from Tucson for 17 miles (27 kilometers) to get here in a bit more than half an hour. Spot the brown sign and turn off the highway. Explore the surroundings for other nearby highlights such as the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, the Old Tucson theme park and Tucson Mountain Park.
