About this property
Walk to Old Rag | Hot Tub | Dog-Friendly Farmhouse
Come spend a weekend or a week immersed in the Shenandoah foothills. This restored farmhouse sits on a quiet country road at the base of Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park and blends historic character with modern comfort. Many guests come to hike, but just as many come to slow down, cook together, enjoy the landscape, and spend meaningful time with family, friends, and dogs.
The home sits on approximately four acres and is surrounded by open land and mountain views. Multiple outdoor spaces invite you to enjoy the setting throughout the day, including a front porch, a screened porch, and a wraparound deck with outdoor dining. There is a Weber grill, a fire pit for evenings outside, and a hot tub overlooking the surrounding pastures and mountains. A smaller fenced area behind the house provides a safe place for dogs to run and relax.
Inside, the house is spacious, warm, and thoughtfully laid out. Original timber beams, an old log cabin section, and carefully chosen finishes give the home a sense of history without sacrificing comfort. The main level flows easily between gathering spaces, making it comfortable for shared meals, conversation, and quiet moments alike. A wood-burning stove is available for guest use and provides warmth and ambiance during cooler months. The original large fireplace in the adjacent family room is not currently in use but remains a beautiful architectural feature of the home.
The kitchen is a central part of the home and is set up for real cooking. It includes cast iron cookware, pots and steamers, non-stick pans, baking sheets, mixers, rolling pins, knives, graters, serving bowls, and storage containers. We also provide starter kitchen basics such as salt, pepper, a variety of spices, olive oil, vinegar, coffee, tea, and sugar. These supplies are intended to help you get started; quantities may vary depending on prior guests.
Upstairs are four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Each bedroom has at least one window with mountain or pasture views and is arranged to give everyone a sense of space and privacy. Bathrooms are recently renovated and combine antique elements with modern fixtures.
This home is the second property in what we now call Old Rag Escapes, a small collection of thoughtfully cared-for homes designed to make time near Old Rag feel easy, comfortable, and memorable. If you are traveling with a larger group, we also have another home right next door that can be rented separately. Many families and friends choose to stay close together while still having their own space.
Dogs are welcome and should be included in your reservation. A $100 pet fee applies for one dog per stay. Up to three dogs may be accommodated for an additional $50 per dog, per stay.
Whether you’re here for hiking, reconnecting, celebrating, or simply enjoying the setting, this home is designed to feel like a place you truly settle into — not just a place to sleep.

Wow, hot tubs under the cool November sky was probably my favorite part if I could get past the excitement of the farm animals! The house was perfect with new ample appliances in the kitchen, multiple rooms with space to relax.
We enjoyed just having a weekend surrounded by beautiful scenery, making meals in the well appointed kitchen. Would definitely come back and do old rag another time.
We had such a great time at the property with friends and our kids. There was plenty of room for the kids to play both inside and outside and the 4 bedrooms allowed us to be together, but still have our personal space. Pretty much every amenity you could ask for made for such a comfortable stay. Really enjoyed it and recommend!
This house was great for our group of friends' weekend escape from DC. The house is beautiful, the yard is great, the access to hiking is unbeatable. We appreciated the well-stocked kitchen and other household supplies like towels and cleaning supplies. And the hot tub was the best part, of course!
This house was perfect! Newly renovated with charming details and fun artwork. 3 couples, a birthday celebration, great food cooked in the well-appointed kitchen (and grill), star gazing in the hot tub, comfortable beds, and loved being able to walk to several hikes. Elena & Hugh were very responsive! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
My family and I had a wonderful stay at Elena's property. We rented both houses which are about a football field apart from each other. The house was well equipped and Elena was an amazing and responsive host. Great location for hiking old rag was well. Would absolutely recommend
Very easy check-in. The house had plenty of room for 6 adults and could easily accommodate another couple. Lots of room to spread out or gather together in the dining room. Nice kitchen and outdoor grill for those who like to cook. Plenty of amenities, pastoral location, and lots of outdoor activities are available within short driving distances. Nice swimming hole within 20 minute walk from house.
Our host, Elena, responded very quickly to my several inquiries. Highly recommend!
We picked this home to have a central location close to the mountains for hiking. The home was beautiful and exactly as pictured. It was very clean. I love the small touches the host included around the house such as board games for some of the other children with us and baby books for my infants. The kitchen was spectacular- I have never stayed in a house that was so well equipped and was very appreciate of that. The location was perfect for access to beautiful orchards and wineries. The property was peaceful and surrounded by farm animals. The host checked in during my stay to ensure everything was going well. I would definitely stay here again!
We had such a nice time. The kitchen was perfect- a hub for grandparents, kids and meal prep. Really, it was the heart of everything. We had every meal on the covered deck and it was perfect. We saw an orange moon and set up a telescope to see the stars from the back porch.
The layout of the rooms was really perfect for multigenerational/multiple households. It felt like the house had two wings so there was plenty of privacy. There are stairs so that is a consideration but the home was just the best for us.
The property has lovely fruit trees in the front and a kind of hidden stream in the back; this was wonderful for birds (including a flock of swallows) butterflies and frogs.
Our sneaky maltese dog get under the fence but I think a 20 pound plus dog would not.
I wholeheartedly recommend this place.
The waterfall trail that the owner mentions was GREAT. We saw some snakes on the way out- but it was the woods. That is part of the deal, right? My daughter swam like a mermaid in the stream.
The shops and coffee shops in Etlan were charming. And some of us scaled Old Rag! Thank you for a lovely vacation!
Great house, very clean, well provisioned, comfortable. We will stay here again. Great location for Old Rag and other hikes. Fantastic kitchen and great room arrangement.
The house had a great kitchen with high-end appliances, pots, pans, etc. It's on a large plot of land with a great firepit. I'd recommend this house to any group or family looking for a quiet getaway. Also, it's right down the road (less than a mile!) from Old Rag.
We were 2 families with 4 adults and 5 kids ages 7-12 and 2 dogs. The home exceeded our expectations! Very clean, well stocked kitchen, charming renovations, plenty of space for everyone to spread out, 2 cozy wood burning fireplaces, pet friendly. Nice touch to be able to walk to the neighbor's house to buy freshly laid eggs. This kids loved the horses, cows, chickens and even a lama on the farm next door. We loved the hot tub and the giant wrap around porch to drink coffee and enjoy the beautiful views. So close to Old Rag tail head you could walk (we did not but if the lots were full we would have). We would absolutely return.
Oh my goodness, I want to live here! We have stayed in so many vacay cabins in VA. This one takes the cake! Our large family traveled from Williamsburg,VA & Texas with lots of kiddos. The views are incredible at the base of Old Rag. We opted for the easier hike next to a babbling creek where all of our babies could play! Minutes from local farms during apple and pumpkin season. Incredibly clean place (white sock approved), COMFORTABLE mattresses, gorgeous home w/ such attention to detail, fun and easy location for large families, incredible hostess w/ quick response time, kind neighbors w/ fresh eggs, and ohhh the hot tub! I can't rave enough about this place! Our family will be back! Memories for years to come.
The house has recently been beautifully renovated. The hosts had every basic supply available to make and eat meals in the beautiful kitchen. I hope to rent it again.
My husband and friends wanted a fall getaway not too far from home so we selected this home for the weekend. The house and property are ABSOLUTELY stunning. Every aspect of this house, from the spaciousness, location, household amenities. Everything is absolutely flawless. We enjoyed a beautiful hike, the local distillery, local shopping and roasting Marshmallows in the gorgeous firepit area. I would give this location more stars, if possible.
