Walton Hall and Gardens is a manor house built in the 1800s for the influential brewer, entrepreneur and political Sir Gilbert Greenhall. The grounds are part of Cheshire’s Gardens of Distinction, a collection of 20 gardens located throughout the county.
If visiting with children then head to the zoo to see donkeys, parrots, peacocks, sheep and squirrels, among other animals. Join a ranger for a guided and educational walk with the zoo’s alpacas. Next to the zoo is a playground surrounded by large grassy lawns, which are ideal for setting up a picnic on a summer’s day. Be sure to stroll around the formal gardens, fruit orchards and woodland areas.
Hone your golf skills at the putting green and then take on the holes of the pitch and putt course. The bridges, bends and obstacles of the miniature golf course are fun for all ages. For more sports, try your hand at crown green bowls on the pristine bowling green.
In summer there’s a busy schedule of events. Sample delicious street food and purchase handmade treats at the Cheshire Food Festival. Watch live screenings from London’s Royal Opera House and blockbuster Hollywood movies on a big screen. Outdoor theater performances interpret classic works, such as Wuthering Heights.
Located just outside the village of Walton, the hall and gardens complex is a 10-minute drive south from Warrington. Travel by bus from Warrington Interchange bus station to the village and then walk for 15 minutes. Metered parking is available for drivers.
