Miami Dolphins Team History

The Miami Dolphins are a part of the NFL’s American Football Conference’s East division and were founded by attorney-politician Joe Robbie and actor Danny Thomas before playing their first season in 1966. The team experienced major success in the 1970’s, becoming both the first team to advance to the Super Bowl for three consecutive seasons and the first and only NFL team to complete a perfect season, winning every regular season game, two playoff games, and Super Bowl VII after defeating the Washington Commanders 14-7. Historic team members such as Earl Morrall, Larry Csonka, and Jim Langer especially contributed to the Dolphin’s early success. The 1980’s and 1990’s was defined by powerhouse quarterback Dan Marino, who in his first season, set single season records for most yards (5,084), touchdown passes (48), completions (362), and was voted as the NFL’s MVP for the 1984 season.

Miami Dolphins Today

The 2017 Miami Dolphins season was the franchise’s 48th season in the NFL, and 52nd overall. Compared to more recent previous season, the Dolphins came off from a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance for the first time since 2008. However, the team was affected by the loss of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who suffered a torn ACL and was replaced by Jay Cutler, who came out of retirement just for this role. Despite the high hopes for the team, the Dolphins struggled during the season and failed to improve on the previous season’s record after losing to the New England Patriots in Week 12 and were eliminated from the postseason after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 16. This was the Dolphin’s fourteenth season missing the playoffs since the league’s realignment in 2002.
