Known to locals as The U, the University of Minnesota is home to some of college sports’ most storied teams. As a founding member of the Big 10 Conference, Minnesota has been competing against top-notch opponents for more than 100 years. Hockey fans can grab a ticket for the Mariucci Arena to see the men’s hockey team, or you can take a seat in the Ridder Arena to see the women’s team as they try to make it into the Frozen Four yet another time. With 9 appearances in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament and 9 bids to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament , the Gophers are always ready for some buzzer-beating action.
Goldy and his Gophers last won a football national championship in 1960, and there have been some tough years since. But the resurgent Golden Gophers are back in regular contention for NCAA Bowl games. One of the toughest tickets to get is for the annual game with the Wisconsin Badgers, where the winner is awarded Paul Bunyan’s axe. Legends like Bronko Nagurski and Tony Dungy got their start in the frozen climes of Minnesota. Be sure to grab your ticket to TCF Bank Stadium to catch the Gophers take on rivals like Iowa and Michigan, as they will sell out quickly.
Don’t forget about the many other sports Minnesota has to offer, including baseball, softball, volleyball. Since the university plays such an integral role in the community, your trip to Minneapolis or St. Paul isn’t complete unless you snag a ticket for a Gopher game and experience this thrilling bit of local culture.
