With recent back-to-back Stanley Cups and a team filled with stars, the Pittsburgh Penguins are ready to take the ice and win it all again. The team boasts 5 NHL championships and legends like Mario Lemieux and Jaromír Jágr and has built up a loyal and raucous fanbase. Snag an affordable Penguins ticket and head to PPG Paints Arena, which is considered to be one of hockey’s premier venues.
Pittsburgh was home to a few hockey teams before the Penguins officially came to town in 1967, when they started playing at the appropriately nicknamed arena, “The Igloo.” The early days of the team were marked by both triumphs and tragedies thanks to a playoff appearance in 1970 in which Michel Briere had a starring role. In a cruel twist of fate, Briere later that same year got into a car accident that led to severe brain damage and his eventual passing at age 21. During the mid-’70s, Lowell MacDonald, Syl Apps, Jr., and Jean Pronovost came together to lead the team into the NHL Playoffs but fell short of a Stanley Cup victory. In the 80’s, Mario Lemieux arrived, and the Penguins came to life. With the addition of Jaromír Jágr in 1990, the Penguins brought home their first Stanley Cup and followed that up with another the next season. Lemieux now owns the team, and the squad shares his characteristic charm and vigor.
The Pittsburgh Penguins will open up the 2022-23 regular season with two-straight games at PPG Paints Arena, beginning with the team's home opener against the Arizona Coyotes on October 13. The Penguins play three of their first four games of the season on home ice before they conclude the opening month of the season with their season-long, five-game road trip to Columbus (Oct. 22), Edmonton (Oct. 24),Calgary (Oct. 25), Vancouver (Oct. 28) and Seattle (Oct. 29). The 2022–23 Pittsburgh Penguins season will be the 56th season for the National Hockey League team that was established on June 5, 1967.
