Tennessee Titans Team History
The Titans were originally formed as the Houston Oilers as one of the eight charter members of the American Football League (AFL) before joining the NFL in 1970. After fan support in Houston collapsed for the 1996 season, the Oilers announced they would be moving to Tennessee for 1997. After a confusing season due to an undesignated home venue, the Oilers became the Tennessee Titans starting in 1999 to mark their transition to Adelphia Coliseum (now known as Nissan Stadium). Their first season there was the best in franchise history, finishing with a 13-3 record and making it to Super Bowl XXXIV, losing to the St. Louis Rams, who are now the Los Angeles Rams. The following season, the titans won their first AFC Central title, and by 2002 were moved to the newly created AFC South Division as a part of the league’s divisional realignment caused by the addition of the Houston Texans.
