Good deal for San Diego

I stayed at this hotel for a combined business and personal getaway. It is an old building but the rooms are large and comfortable. We stayed in a one bedroom suite that accomodated my husband, myself, and 2 small children. The hotel provided us with a crib for our one-year old. The mini fridge was very helpful as both my young children needed their milk. Being walking distance from the grocery store (Ralph’s) was even more of a bonus. There were a lot of inexpensive eating options around and seaport village was a 20 minute walk away. The only downside that really sticks out is the noise. There is a nightclub that plays loud music until approximately 2 AM. But since my children are heavy sleepers, it didn’t matter as much.

Nice but noisy

It’s a nice hotel in the center of San Diego’s nightlife, so it’s noisy until very late.

not impressed

They told us (myself and my husband) parking would be $20 a day and when we checked out they charged $28 a day.

Great Location

Spent a weekend there, so didn’t rent a car. The hotel is close to everything in the Gaslamp District, so it was an easy walk to restaurants and shopping. Continental breakfast on the roof was okay - not much of a breakfast eater - though the view was nice. Check in and out was quick. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable, though the pillows were on the small side. Room faced the street, so it was a little noisy late at night, but it was a weekend and the noise wasn’t enough to keep us awake. We definitely recommend a stay here.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

If you’re only staying for a couple days or don’t intend to go much beyond walking distance, save the cost of a car rental. A cab from the airport will cost you about the same as the daily parking charge.

A Nice Holiday

Good location for the sights. Older hotel and not as kid friendly as we would have liked.

Traveler's tip on dining

Skip the continental and hop around the corner to O’Brians. Nice pancakes.

Historic Gaslamp Quarter

We were very satisfied with our stay at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites Hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the price was right. Our suite was very spacious and comfortable. We were on the 5th Floor and had two very large picture windows that overlooked 5th Avenue and ongoing activities and excitement of the Gaslamp Quarter. Within walking distance of a multitude of shops and fine restaurants and conveniently located to the Convention Center, Horton Plaza and the waterfront. Continental breakfast on the roof was special with the lovely views. We will definitely stay again. Thanks for a great time.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

Conveniently located near The San Diego Convention Center and Downtown.

Great location

The staff was very friendly. The room was much bigger than I expected with giant windows overlooking the city. We were in walking distance of Petco, Gaslamp restaurants and bars, and the mall. The rooftop complimentary breakfast was wonderful!

Traveler's tip on dining

We had a nice breakfast at the restaurant next to the Ramada across the street.

A Taste of Old San Diego

The hotel was quaint. It had history. The room consisted of a large queen bed and living area with a fold out couch and a small kitchen area completely equiped. The continental breakfast was served on the roof and offered an awesome view of the city. Centrally located in the Gas Lamp Quarter just a few blocks from Horton Plaza. The staff was helpful and pleasant.

Loved their beds

Their queen beds are so comfortable! The sofa beds are not but that’s probably just the way it is. Anyway it was for our kids (5 and 7) and they did not complain.

Very Comfortable with Friendly Staff

This historic hotel is in the heart of all the action. Excellent location in the Gaslamp Quarter. Keep in mind that this is an old building so it’s not pristeen. However, they take really good care of the hotel and I was very happy with my stay there. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Although my room wasn’t yet ready for an early check-in, they held my luggage and offered advice about places to have lunch and spend some time while waiting for check-in time. My room was a generous size and had a nice view of the Gaslamp. Everything is right outside the hotel’s door! The rooftop breakfast was very nice and the view is excellent! I highly recommend taking your breakfast up there. I really, really liked this hotel. She’s a little old but in very good condition and quite lovely. And, yes, very clean!

Great area but noisy

This is a beautiful hotel in a great area. We could take the trolley and bus system everywhere. We could also walk around at night to a lot of the restaurants. We did read reviews that warned of the noise level so we requested one of the top floors. Even on the 9th floor we could not believe the noise level from the street below. A LOT of nightlife! Fun but realize that there will be some noise. I think the only quiet night was Monday Hotel staff was great. They even called around a got us a hair appt for my teenage son who all of a sudden decided he needed to have it cut. All in all a great experience.

In the historic heart of the city

We were enveloped in the charm and character of historic San Diego. We were surrounded by the beauty of the harbor and the roof top lounge offered amazing views of the city. The hotel location offered us nightly excitement in the GasLamp District and relaxation in the comfortable suites.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Bicycle rentals available neat the harbor. A bicycle was a fun method to see the inner city.

Great hotel for price and location

Nice suite style room - a little too loud from the hallway (as well as light from the glass door), but the charm of the older building is well worth it. A nice continental breakfast on the roof each morning was included. I stayed for a conference at the Convention Center, and its a nice walk to get there.

Traveler's tip on dining

Two places to try in San Diego - Cremerie Chocolat (for the savory crepes or the gelato) and Masala for delicious Indian food.

Would not recommend

The hotel receptionist was terrible! Talk about a bad first impression. Upon entering the hotel she was on a dating website talking loud enough about it so that guests in the lobby could hear. When she came out to check us in, it was obvious that she was irritated that we interrupted her. She was short, rude and not the least bit accomodating. The room was ok, nothing to write home about, but the initial impression "soured" the whole experience.

Will go back

If you let yourself get stopped by the cramped and old lobby area, you’ll miss a treat. The rooms are large and comfortable and the roof top breakfast area is a great view.

Very convenient location

This is a neat looking old hotel right in the heart of the Gaslamp district in downtown San Diego. They’ve maintained the old-fashioned look while still upgrading the room amenities with flat screen tv’s, comfortable beds, as well as a coffee maker, fridge, & microwave. Parking with valet was most convenient, but could have done without the cost (around $30/day). Also, wireless is available - but is not complimentary (around $10/day). Very basic continental breakfast was included (pastries, toast, cereal) & is served daily on the roof top - which has an amazing view. Probably wouldn’t stay again unless the rate was discounted, or unless they included wifi or parking... just found it a bit overpriced, even for the location.

Absolutely Gorgeous & EXCELLENT location!

Gaslamp Plaza was a superb selection -- after a stressful househunting "vacation", it was incredibly restful & luxurious! We attended a Padres game, walked around Gas Lamp / Old Towne for a while & then thoroughly enjoyed the plush, ultra-comfortable bed! While it did get a bit boisterous until late, it was one of the first warm days of Spring (early April) & everyone was out enjoying themselves (we had an early morning flight!). Staff was highly accomodating to our needs (cabs, directions to ball park / restaurants etc) & the room was very clean & well stocked. I’ll definitely go back again!

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Get ready to enjoy yourself! Hotel is located at the edge of GasLamp, in walking distance to multiple excellent restaurants & clubs - not to mention the ballpark! Easy to catch a cab & get to SeaWorld & San Diego Zoo - and the waterfront, of course!

Great location and price, will definitelly go back

Great location, no luxury but very clean and spacious enough suites. If you dont like noise you may want to stay away as the bars around the corner play music until the am - they close their windows to minimize noise but you can still hear it. I didnt mind so I was great for me!

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Stay here if you are looking to enjou the nightlife of the Gaslamo district or shopping. Gaslamp Tavern is a great spot for reasonably priced drinks and good music

Great Location, Clean Room

Even though they weren’t able to accomodate our request for a room with a pull-out sofa, the room we got was just enough space and very clean. The view was nice, the rooftop terrace was a great bonus space! But the best part is the location. For being in the heart of the Gaslamp, you can’t beat the prices here. Great value!
