    Geography

California is very much a land of contrasts with varied geography that runs the gamut from parched, sunbaked deserts in the south to temperate, misty forests and snow-capped mountain ranges in the north. The state is home to portions of the beautiful Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges, including the towering spire of Mount Whitney, which stands as the tallest peak in the Lower 48. The Coast Ranges, famed for the towering coast redwoods that thrive in the mountainous terrain, run along the western portion of the state. Between the mountain ranges, the Central Valley is home to both bucolic farmlands and inland cities such as Sacramento. Bordering the Pacific Ocean, the western coast of California is world-renowned for its unique terrain and stunning vistas. With so many different climates and environments, there truly are resorts in California for just about everyone. Let Expedia.com help you find the perfect fit for your West Coast escape.

"Walking distance from Southwest terminal at LAX"
Excellent. I was stranded at the airport and walking into this hotel was like finding an oasis in the desert. The staff was immediately welcoming and the check in process was very simple. Room was amazing and the bed super comfy. Great choice of TV channels. Fantastic view of the entrance to LAX and planes landing. Room service super fast and I had a delicious eggs benedict breakfast served with fresh OJ and a flower in a vase. Everyone I dealt with was super polite and friendly. I would definitely recommend it.

"Historic Oceanview Santa Monica Hotel, lovely"
Beautiful historic ocean view Santa Monica hotel that's walking distance to all the SM hot spots. We came for a one night getaway and were happy with the hotel's location, close to the SM pier and 3rd Street Promenade and with all rooms having ocean view. Close to all the tourist spots but not right on top of them made the Fairmont Miramar a great choice for us. Very good service, I had forgotten an overnight item and the front desk provided it no charge.

"Good location, nice rooms, hotel is a little dated"
Bad check in experience. Arrived at 4:30, check in time as 4pm. Was told no king rooms available except for a corner room which would cost an extra $40 a night. I passed on that, they said they would text me when a room came available. The wife & I went to the bar and waited. An hour later after noticing people walking up and getting rooms I asked again and yes they had rooms available now and yet no one had texted me.
