    Geography

California is very much a land of contrasts with varied geography that runs the gamut from parched, sunbaked deserts in the south to temperate, misty forests and snow-capped mountain ranges in the north. The state is home to portions of the beautiful Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges, including the towering spire of Mount Whitney, which stands as the tallest peak in the Lower 48. The Coast Ranges, famed for the towering coast redwoods that thrive in the mountainous terrain, run along the western portion of the state. Between the mountain ranges, the Central Valley is home to both bucolic farmlands and inland cities such as Sacramento. Bordering the Pacific Ocean, the western coast of California is world-renowned for its unique terrain and stunning vistas. With so many different climates and environments, there truly are resorts in California for just about everyone. Let Expedia.com help you find the perfect fit for your West Coast escape.

Great location and comfortable beds ! I picked this location because it was central. It worked well. The hotel itself was great. The only thing was the noise from the street but the hotel had ear plugs in the room for that.

    "LOVED this hotel so much"
What a pure delight to check into this amazing hotel. We knew it was close to Union Square and that was about it. LOVED our experience from check-in to check out. Loved how walkabout it was around Union Square which was big for my teenage shopper. Our room had gorgeous views and was so comfortable. Imagine our surprise when we turned on the remote control in the bathroom and a tv was there! We had dinner in the restaurant and the salmon was wonderful. Their breakfast buffet was amazing with both american and japanese options. We will definitely stay here on future visits to San Francisco!!!

"Nice downtown hotel w/ great access to everything"
I needed to stay at a hotel for a week because of repairs to my home. I also needed a place that would accept pets. And, I wanted a place that would be close to my work, which is downtown. The Sofia was reasonably priced and fit the bill. I knew that the Sofia had been completely remodeled and was now considered a nice boutique hotel. I was impressed with the quality of the remodel and the aesthetics of the hotel. Although my room was small, it was very comfortable and nice. Towels, bedding were good quality. Carpet clean and modern. Kind of odd shower arrangement with no curtain or full screen. It allowed bathroom floor to get pretty wet. Television was great but channel selection was limited. There was free wifi. Hallways were fine. Elevators were small but operated okay. Lobby had several areas where you could sit and chat or watch television, although you couldn't change the channels, which was a little aggravating. Currant restaurant was accessible from hotel lobby. This is a high quality restaurant with great happy hour deals on food and drinks. Other restaurants very close. All staff encountered were great. Hotel is within walking distance of downtown San Diego restaurants, waterfront, shopping (Horton Plaza, Seaport Village), and downtown businesses, courts, law firms, banks. 7/11 in next block. Trolley within a block. Homeless people an issue near hotel, but this is the case throughout downtown San Diego - really unfortunate situation.
