Great location! Ocean front room worth extra money. More like motel than hotel. Great place.

Great ocean front room, pool area is great. Office was across the street with pool, but not a big deal. Staff was extremely helpful and nice. Rooms were older and more like motel, but clean and ocean front!!

Just a place to sleep

If your looking for a hotel room to spend your trip in, this isn’t it. If you’re just looking for a decent place to sleep after a days activity this place is fantastic. Cheap, close to just about everything since it’s on kihei rd, and the parking is excellent. The rooms are very dated, but the pool is okay and the ocean is well within walking distance of the ’garden’ side rooms.

The ’ol Maui Lu is what is is!

We’ve stayed at the Maui Lu 5 times now, and ee go every year for Halloween, Maui Lu is what it is. It is one of the oldest resorts in Kihei, and prettey much is a very cheap place to stay without all the fancy "new" ammenities. The sweeping lawns & grounds are kept immaculant, the pool was cleaner, and they now have Luau’s on the grounds 2 nights a week. If you don’t mind old & rundown you’ll love this nostalgic paradise. This year our room (204) appeared to have been redecorated with new carpet, mattresses, bedspreads & a large compact refer. The door had a large gap in the bottom and all the way around, curtains were old, wrinkeled and there was a strong odor of Mold/mildew in the room and the elevator. We bought a can of Frebreeze tropical spray and all was well. The shower was great and really blasted, the bathroom was pretty good. The air conditioner in this room is much quieter than what we’ve had in the past, and didn’t bother me at all. We spent the money we saved from the room on a great Halloween cruise trip to Lahaina, and the fantastic "Old Lahaina Luau". If you want mints on your pillow, room service, plush terry towels, and a sterile enviroment then this isn’t the place for you! If you just want a down home place to go at night, with a room that’s Hawaiian rustic then go here and save the bucks for fun.

The Pacific Whale Foundation (Save the Whales) is located at Ma’alea Harbor north of Kihei. If you join their membership (It’s like $45 for a family membership) you get great discounts for snorkeling, sunset, dinner, cocktail and whale watching cruises, the Aquarium, and in their Ocean store. Really cool - If you’re a memeber and book a water activitiy the members get the pleasure of boarding the boat & picking you seats first which is nice if there’s 120 people on board. Their activities are really great and they take good care of everyone. They are really, really good with children. Their Ocean Store has some great items and you get a member discount. Their boats are made from recyled materials, use biofuel, and everything used on the trips are recycleable. I love this group and what they do for our enviroment.

An enjoyable stay

This hotel is not new but has been remodeled. I got an easy upgrade to an ocean view. It was very nice for the price. If you are expecting perfect and up to date this hotel is not for you. However, that said, the grounds are really very spectacular. Huge old coconut trees everywhere and the grounds and pool are very well maintained. On Friday evening they had a Luau that was fun and priced right. Everyone had a good time. This was the best bargain hotel that I have stayed at on my various trips to Hawaii. If you are a bargain traveler this is a great choice.

Don’t miss Turtle Town (hung out with 2 huge sea turtles there) and Molokini snorkel trips. Take the road to Hana and see the black sand beaches too. Sunrise on Haleakala is well worth the drive. And if you are like me, because of the jet lag, I wake up at 4 in the morning anyway my first few days in Hawaii.

Great Service but poor maintinance - very poor

the furniture was really old. the paint in the room was tearing apart. the TV is from like 1980 - not that you should be watching TV in hawaii anyway but just so you know. The white coating on the tub was coming off. I looked at a couple rooms and then choose to stay in the best one - this review is of the best room I found (out of 3 rooms). I had the ocean front.

Will definately return.

The bathroom door needed to be replaced by an actual door instead of a sliding door. Also, there was no light over the mirror in the bathroom. The light was in the middle of the room. Beds were great. Coffee each morning in room would have been great. More Hawaiian pictures would be nice. Overall, it was WONDERFUL!

Good value

Maui Lu represented good value for a place on the beach in Maui. Majority of property is on opposite side of the road paralelling the beach, but they have some beachside rooms. Nothing fancy, but comfortable and far enough away from the hustle of Kehie to relax YET close enough to take part in the action. You’ll definitely need car to take full advantage

Clean but outdated

If you are looking for a hotel for a day or two like I was I would high recommend. Cheap, clean but very very outdate. Staff was nice and helpful. I would not make this your destination for a week or two but it worked great when my air flight was cancelled.

Resort neglected-for too long!

Loved the grounds, and location. The swimming pool was nice but didn’t open until 8:00 am, and that is when they start the pool maintenance (they had 9 employees to wash the chairs and deck surface, and skim pool-it took an hour and 20 minutes-the whole time we felt uncomfortable, because we were outnumbered. The room needed to be updated-the bathroom tiles were cracked, dated decor, poor electrical(power went out one night briefly-if the upstairs air conditioning was on, the end table lamps in the living room wouldn’t work!). The true overall satisfaction would have been 2 1/2 if that were an option.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

There are many good deals,on all of the excurtions-if you go to the smaller towns business districts.

Older hotel, but well taken care of.

We took the upgraded room, on the beach front... and I highly recommend doing so, nothing beats waking up or falling asleep to the sounds of waves. The hotel is an older hotel, but pains are taken to keep things from crumbling, and everything looks nice. The Staff is also very friendly.

WISE CHOICE FOR ECONOMIC VOCATION

HOTEL IS GOOD LOCATION AND CLEANING. SERVICE IS EXCELLENT, AND PEOPLE ARE FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. I WILL DEFINITELY BOOK IT AGAIN FOR NEXT VOCATION.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

IT HAS ALMOST EVERYTHING, BUT YOU NEED MORE TIME.

Good budget hotel

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel. Reception was helpful for places to eat and local attractions. The room was decent but because we were staying only 2 nights, they put us 3 rooms from the elevator. I can say that the room was not sound isolated. Also at the reception they have a microwave oven for your convenience. We were not in the ocean view nor ocean front buildings but on the same side of the reception.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

If you have a long stay, ask for an upgrade to ocean view or ocean front. It does worth it.

Wish we could have stayed longer

We were very satisfied with the Aston Maui Lu. The staff was great, the beach was great and the Polynesian Dance they put on was awesome. We stayed in the "Beachfront Room" and we never imagined that all we had to do was walk out our front door and the beach was right there. We met locals and a couple from Germany. Everyone was happy and generous with information about the island. What an experience!! If you are looking for a fancy 5 star accommodation with room service you might look elsewhere, but, if you are looking for a relaxing good time, this is the place. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Everything is just a few minutes away. If you want to go to the other side of Maui, it is just a short drive.

good value, good location

The Maui Lu is a great value, but if you don’t like the room you’re given (as we didn’t), ask for another one. Our first room was in an older looking section, not as updated, not as clean as the room we got on the other side of the courtyard. The first room was on the west side, right behind the reception area and was noisy, with noise from the vending machine, etc. adding to the general AC noise. However, when we asked, we were immediately allowed to see a much nicer room (with a balcony, this time) and we moved there. This was a far better room, for the same price. The staff at the Maui Lu were all very nice and helpful, the pool area was great, and the grounds were lovely. Especially fantastic was the willingness of the manager and staff to mail me my IPod nano, which I forgot in the room. They did this for me even though it turned out to be a bit of a hassle for them, requiring a total of about 3 phone calls. So, to re-cap. For the money, this place is great, but you need to ask for a change if you don’t like your room.

Traveler's tip on dining

The Kihei cafe is a great, inexpensive place for breakfast or lunch. Forget Wailea beach and go to the one just north of it. Much less crowded, and just as nice.

Can’t wait to go back!!!

I have stayed at this hotel twice now and I love it!! It’s not fancy but it’s right on the beach and has a wonderful cove all to itself. I highly recommend this cozy little spot! I like it much better than the pricey resorts :) It’s just very comfortable and relaxing.

Worth the Upgrade

The Maui Lu just perfect for us. One thing I didnt like was the sheet were changed every three days. I wasnt sure if that meant every three days for people who stayed longer periods or just every three days no matter who. Otherwise the grounds were beautiful, the beach rooms were marvelous for a small amount. Needs bigger parking area on beach side. Pool was great, never seen a 10 ft deep pool before. People were so friendly and helpful. Close to stores too.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Hilo Hatties greeting us with shell lai’s and had wonder sales. Look in the travelers books found around town and you can get a free item from Hilo Hatties. Close to Maui Lu Resort too.

very average but good for the price, I have been in worse hotels with higher ratings

one of the first hotels built in Maui and now showing its age. pool was renovated. rooms need to be updated, problem with flying ants in our room but the staff were good to help us out. overall a nice place but now where to eat close by. A short bus trip and you are there. A nice little place for the price.

Spend at least 4 days and get a car to travel around to see and shop

The hotel needs to pay attention to the room conditions

I stayed at the standard room, the air-conditioning unit is really old, it was very hot in the room. The hotel room condition is very old and dirty, needs remodeling. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a church at resort hotel. I attended the Sunday Service, which very good. The hotel room rate was good and that the hotel is at a very good location, but you may want to pay more to enjoy a more comfortable holiday.

Great place to take your family!! Church right on the Resort Grounds

Wonderful service, kind and helpful staff. Great help with driving directions when needed. Beautiful grounds. Our child stayed in the pool for hours. Amazing Sunset location at the Resort’s private cove. We will definitely stay here again.

Talk to your Hotel Concierge to get accurate driving directions. All of the maps we used to get around were incomplete. There are no Urgent Care clinics open on Sundays. Shop at Star Markets for your Groceries and try to purchase items that were made or grown on Maui, they are cheaper. Everyone drives SLOW so try to relax and enjoy the scenery.
