Where to stay

in Bucklige Welt

At the edge of the Alps, the Land of the Thousand Hills promises a world of spectacular scenery that turns white with snow in winter.

Visit Bucklige Welt to explore quaint villages between which lie dramatic valleys, mountains and meadows that create a serene and scenic setting. Hike up and down the peaks and troughs of this bucolic wonderland in the eastern part of Austria.

Explore various villages and notice the general warmth and helpfulness of local residents. Try the local food specialties. Grammel dumplings are a regional favorite. Drive around the countryside and enjoy mesmerizing views at the top of each hill. The elevations vary from 1,230 feet (375 meters) to almost 3,000 feet (900 meters) above sea level. Delve into the dense and unspoiled forests and enjoy a picnic with the calls of wildlife in the forest.

The area’s name translates as Hilly World, in reference to the undulating terrain. This is a popular setting for vacationers on weekend trips from nearby Vienna.

Visit some of the sights, including the iconic Kirchschlag Castle in the small town of Kirchschlag in der Buckligen Welt. The restored medieval structure stands at the top of a hill beside the Fire Tower, whose summit provides excellent views. Relax in one of the cafés next to the town’s Hauptplatz (Main Square) and browse the neighborhood shops.

Find another excellent viewing tower in Hutwisch, with vistas extending across the Steiner Alps and the tallest mountain in Lower Austria, the Schneeberg. In winter, see the region transformed by thick snow, with cross-country skiing and slopes available in Sankt Corona am Wechsel and Spratzau.

The region occupies much of Lower Austria, on the eastern side of the Alps mountain range. It stands beside the Wechsel massif and the Semmering area, approaching the Hungarian border of eastern Austria. While in this part of the country, make sure to explore other surrounding areas such as the Rosalia Mountains, Vienna and the Geschriebenstein mountain.
