Visit the Gorges du Fier for an unforgettable scene, with dramatic cliffs towering over both sides of a fast and narrow river. A footpath wraps precariously around the edge of the rock face, providing exceptional views of the running stream below. As you wander along, listen to the constant rush of the flowing water beneath you.
When you arrive, pick up a brochure in English that explains the local geography. Read about how erosion from the running water has formed the gorge. The pathway is attached to the side of the cliff, 82 feet (25 meters) above the water. Peek down over the railings at the river, as its water crashes against the sides of the cliffs and passes over rocks in the valley.
Expect the course to take about 1 hour to complete. Enter the shop to browse the array of postcards and other items proudly displaying the stunning scenery of the gorge. You’ll find books, magnets and stuffed toys among other souvenirs available for purchase.
Enjoy a meal on the terrace of the bar at the entrance to the gorge. Alternatively, bring your own snacks and drinks for a picnic on one of the nearby designated tables.
Note that the footpath is accessible from mid March until mid October. It is open daily from morning until late afternoon, stretching into the evening during the longest days of summer. There is a fee to access the gorge, with a discount for those under age 16. Younger children can enter for free.
Find the Gorges du Fier in the Pont Vert district that runs along the northern part of Chavanod. From Annecy, drive west for 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) to travel here in about 25 minutes. Drop off your car in the free parking lot near Pontverre or the larger one next to the Château de Montrottier. While you’re in the area, check out some of the surrounding landmarks, such as Golf de Montrottier and the Maison du Grand Pré.
