In the town of Gunbower, where whispers of the past linger, there stands a sacred refuge - The Travelling Bishop. A gentle hymn of tranquility beckons the weary traveller, weaving spirituality and repose into the very fabric of this hallowed space.
Within the timeworn walls of this sacred haven, we invite you to dance with shadows and echoes of bygone prayers. The Travelling Bishop seamlessly blends the ethereal with the earthly, where sacred solitude becomes a melody that serenades the soul.
The space
St Matthew's Catholic Church was built in 1926 after the travelling priests needed somewhere permanent to hold their services. We have carefully renovated the structure and interiors to preserve and reflect the history and heritage of the sacred building.
The church is located on the edge of Gunbower, on the Main Street within walking distance to the quaint town. The large private garden extends beyond the gravel parking area, where large mature gum trees are a reflection of this landmark's history. Watch the sunset from the fire pit as the sun goes down over the neighbouring paddocks.
Inside the ethereal open hallowed space of the church is maintained through the open plan, with a partitioned space for the king bed, and a dressing room in the original Vestibule. The large lounge and dining area are in the Nave, with the kitchen prominently sitting within the Sanctuary where there is plenty of room to entertain. The Sacristy, where the priest would once change, is now the large bathroom with a claw foot bath, and you will find the WC in the original Confessional.
A nod to the Church's previous use is strongly reflected through a detailed curation of furniture and objects. All of the historic features have been restored, yet you will experience modern comforts such as heating, cooling and a full kitchen. The space is private and tranquil as the cathedral ceiling soars above you, and the original gothic windows with cathedral glass allow dramatic ethereal light to shift and change as the day passes, yet maintaining privacy.
Come and travel back through time to an old world of self reflection and solitude, while experiencing a significant heritage building. Create memories as the church continues to be a place of witnessing life's greatest moments. Leave the modern world behind and experience this spiritual space.
The Church accommodates up to two guests. By all means you are welcome to bring a portacot for babies. Please also contact us if you would like to have more people stay, for example if you are wanting to host your bridal party before your wedding day.
Guest access
The entire church and large grounds are all yours. Submerse yourself in the tranquil church space, or enjoy the expansive garden with paddocks beyond. Please be mindful the neighbouring farm is operational, and occasionally have cows over the fence. Please do not explore beyond the fences and into the paddock.
Other things to note
Please note we do not accept children or animals due to the delicate church furnishings. Please also refrain from lighting candles. The church is not suitable for people with mobility issues due to the steps and step in bath.
