a vacation.”a perfect family getaway”
We found our calling for a getaway purely by accident wanting to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city with our dogs. A few clicks on the website that Craig Newmark founded, we found us a nice cottage on the Esopus creek where we spent the day catching up on conversations and swimming with the dogs in between our wine therapy. At one point, we looked at each other and our happy pooches and said to each other “We should do this every weekend".
And so we did….and found “Chez Rive Gauche" a simple, warm and very inviting waterfront getaway a short 90 minute drive from NYC.
So if you dream about escaping from a busy work week to relax by the water; canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, watching breathtaking sunsets and beautiful starry nights, Chez Rive Gauche is the perfect getaway for you.
“Chez", as we lovingly call it, sits on the beautiful Esopus creek and is fully furnished with global and vintage finds. This charming cottage has two bedrooms, a spacious living room and a well equipped kitchen combined with a dining room. Each of the bedrooms are outfitted with queen beds complete with organic sheets and down comforters. The mudroom leads you to the spacious outdoor deck with a dining area to enjoy views of the creek and the farm across while the sounds of the occasional train reminds you of the french countryside . Its complete with another welcoming deck right on the water plus a private dock( seasonal) and canoe for your exclusive enjoyment. The property is fenced in so your four legged companion will be safe but getting them away from the fun in the water is a totally different matter.
While you may not want to leave the cottage and the never ending fun “creek" side, there are a number of historic towns like Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties and Rhinebeck within 10 miles to enjoy festivals, flea markets, restaurants, farmers markets, shopping and antiquing.
If winter sports are your thrill of choice, Hunter Mountain and Wyndham are a short drive away. Depending on the season, this 5 miles stretch of the creek freezes solid, providing an excellent opportunity to ice fish and skate if you are up for an adventure.
All of these aspects are what makes Chez Rive Gauche so unique so what are you waiting for.
Important considerations before making a reservation:
Our goal is to give you an unforgettable experience, we really want you to enjoy your stay as much as we have had living here.
The cottage faces the creek. The creek is deep and its something to keep in mind, when you venture into the water.
We live in the country and you might encounter an occasional spider, files, and other creatures to varying degrees. We do not use poison on the main level as we have pets
We are dog owners and the cottage is pet friendly. If you are allergic to pets, please take this into consideration. As much as we try to get every bit of fur out, there might be some fur that skipped our broom.
The cottage is fenced on three sides (fourth being the water) there might be a gap where the fence and water meet, so if you have very curious pets, its something to consider especially if the pet is left unattended.
The cottage has a septic, so please do not flush anything other than body waste and minimal tissue. I also provide organic/biodegradable shampoo, conditioner and body wash
Our cottage has town water which is safe to drink
Noises - Living on the water brings about its own set of noises. Besides the ducks quacking, the fish jumping, you will also hear the train. Towards the front of the cottage runs a goods train track. The goods train passes by and there is no fixed schedule. Kids love the train and some adults say it reminds them of their childhood or a french countryside. Whatever the case maybe, goods traveling by train is good for the economy and the environment. If you think the train will disturb you during your stay, our cottage might not be the right fit for you.
We also do not have a dishwasher or laundry facilities. ( a Laundromat is a five min drive away) If you are staying for more than a week, fresh linens and towels will be provided.
TV has only Netflix ( no cable tv )

I chose our home because of the location, but I know we cannot chose our neighbors and what they do to, with, and in their homes. We have a diverse neighborhood of people of different colors and socio economic backgrounds. We also have lots of trees which have leaves and twigs that fall and i cannot keep the outdoors as clean as the indoors because of the trees, leaves, twigs dust and especially pollen in the spring which are the joys of outdoor living. The dock is seasonal only during summer.
The train passes by anytime day and night. Now that goods are being transported you are sure to hear the train. Some days they seldom pass by, there is no schedule. The creek is long and deep. There is a waterfall on both ends.
While we love our home I am well aware that our home does not work for everyone which is why I highlight these negatives. Please make your decision to book our home with all this in consideration.
