Historic Point Comfort Lodge on Upper Klamath Lake at Rocky Point

HISTORY
Point Comfort Lodge was built by a railroad and lumber tycoon from the mid west in 1912. At the turn of the century it was fashionable for wealthy families on the east coast to build large summer homes in the Adirondacks. Most of these vacation homes were log cabin or mission style architecture. When the Klamath Development Company was developing the lumber harvesting business in Klamath Falls they built Point Comfort to be their vacation home at the foot of the Cascade Mountains on the shore of upper Klamath Lake. Originally, four great lodges were built on Klamath Lake; they were Eagle Ridge, Odessa, Harriman Springs (built by E.H. Harriman) and Point Comfort. Point Comfort is the only one remaining today, making her the Grand Dame of the Lake

Point Comfort was designed by a renowned craftsman style architect from Berkley California. The restoration of the Lodge took 7 years to complete from the hardwood floors, wood paneled walls to the windows and doors containing 805 panes of glass. Her restoration adhering to historical guidelines has earned her a place on the National Registry of Historical Places.

LODGE STYLE
The Lodge is furnished with a blend of contemporary furniture and valuable antiques from the Craftsman period. For your enjoyment we have added two vintage pinball machines, no charge to play. The Lodge’s commercial kitchen is equipped to feed many, with its Wolf range, separate icemaker, dishwasher, two refrigerators, 8 foot stainless steel sink unit and prep island with sink. There are enough dishes for 30 people.

PATIOS, DECKS AND DOCKS
The front entrance has a lovely covered porch that is a restful place to sit. On the lakeside of the Lodge is a deck, which overlooks the lake. Below this deck is a large cement patio, perfect for outdoor entertaining. The dock will accommodate up to eight average sized boats and comes with a ladder if you happen to jump in. A peddle boat is available for guest use. Bring lifejackets. The three acres of land surrounding the Lodge are planted in rolling lawns, and natural plant species of the surrounding area. The gardens are beautiful in the spring when the lilac bushes and the flowering trees are in bloom. There are several large rock outcroppings to set off the gentle slope to the lake.

THE LAKE
Klamath Lake is home to 452 bird species and Eagles are often seen in the trees on the property. In the summer the trout come from all over the 94,000 acre lake into the bay in front of the lodge. These wild trout are a strain of steelhead landlocked in the lake 80 years ago. They average 2-3 pounds and fish over 8 pounds are not uncommon. This is a favorite spot for fly fishermen. There are miles of canoe and kayaking trails throughout the marsh. Enjoy a morning cup of coffee and watch the fish jumping in the lake! This facility is perfect for family reunions and gatherings of 8 or more.

NEARBY
Rocky Point Resort is ½ mile down the road, accessible by car, a short walk, or a boat ride from our dock to theirs. They have a small store, restaurant with full bar, and boat rentals. Lake of the Woods Resort is 8 miles north on Hwy 140, a short 10 minute drive. Lake of the Woods features a restaurant, boat rental, store and excellent swimming beaches. The Running Y Resort is 15 minutes south on Hwy 140 which features bar and restaurant, convenience store, and a wonderful 18 hole Golf course designed by Arnold Palmer, rated as one of the top 100 in the U.S. Crater Lake is a beautiful drive, just 45 minutes north. Lava Beds National Monument a hour to the south. These are just a few of the many things to do in the Klamath Falls area.

What a wonderful place for a family gathering’!
The bedrooms are plenty roomy and beds so comfortable! It’s fun to imagine it as an actual operating lodge. Plenty of parking. We would have enjoyed the outset of the property but November just not the month for it. I thought from Vrbo ad this was in Klamath Falls but it’s about 25 minutes out. Family said the drive was worth it for the accommodations.

Beautiful historic lodge on Klamath Lake
This is a charmer and the pictures don’t capture the historic beauty of this old lodge. In addition, the house was filled with antiques and art and so many interesting features. The coffered ceilings and the view of the lake were beautiful. The kayaks for our use were appreciated by our group. We gathered here with old college friends and it was a lovely and spacious place for our gathering with a big kitchen for us to cook together. The beds were all comfortable. The owners were so accommodating and east to work with. This is a great place for a large group gathering!

The lodge and setting surpassed my expectations. The lodge accomodated the entire family and our needs. It was bigger than i expected. Gorgeous scenery, the lake right there, quiet, serene, and beautiful. Property manager was instantly responsive and helpful. We all were impressed with the place and experience. I highly recommend!

A magical week at historic Point Comfort
My family of 13 made wonderful memories at Bill’s beautifully restored Lodge. We felt like we were staying in a museum with many antiques that gave an historical perspective to life in this old wooded community. The entire lodge was very spacious and clean for our group. The kitchen was well equipped. The grandchildren children had activities they enjoyed outside. We all loved the area’s wonderful wildlife and especially enjoyed the fantastic fishing on the serene lake. We did have a few glitches in communication prior to our arrival but it was all mutually resolved. Thank you Bill for allowing us to thoroughly enjoy our stay on your great property. Aloha, Felice B.

Step into a different world
At the risk of spoiling the effect of your own experience, I'll describe what it's like to step into this historic register lodge. Step in...and you are stepping back in time to 1912. You also step up, most likely, a tax bracket or two unless you are a tycoon yourself. You can't help but imagine what life was like back then, in this lodge where the upper crust gathered to hunt, fish, boat, entertain and relax over 100 years ago. Don't bring your servant; that would deprive you the joy of cooking in the kitchen which has several commercial fixtures, good quality knives and ample utensils. Serve it up on an unending supply of dishes and cutlery. The lodge has a very comfortable, lived-in feel. Yes, you have become a lumber and railroad tycoon, and a couple of cobwebs don't bother you because hey, you're roughing it in your summer getaway lodge. We have stepped back into reality, but hope to return to the Comfort Lodge. What an experience! (Noteworthy also: Yes, we rented the pontoon boat which was great, also used the kayaks alot. Streets are quiet for walking. Fun day trips: Lava Beds National Monument and Crater Lake)

We are very much enjoyed our brief stay at the lodge. What a treasure! The lodge has been beautifully maintained. Would definitely like to come back when the weather is a bit warmer and we can stay longer.

Great Getaway
We loved our time at the lodge. The neighbors were so friendly and the manager was very communicative prior to our stay. The lake was beautiful but I was a bummer we couldn't swim. The home set up was perfect for our 3 family group! The listing does need an update- there are no longer pinball machines. But there ARE plenty of kayaks to use & life jackets. We had lots of fun with them. We saw lots of wildlife- eagles, beaver, deer and pelican. The canoe trail on the lake is so much fun, I highly recommend it (it is 6 miles). And we loved the use of the Pontoon boat. The cabin is so close to hiking trails, waterfalls and Crater Lake (we highly recommend taking the Cleetwood Cove Trail down to the water). For runners- Rocky Point Road is a great spot to run with hills if you want a challenge. The beds were some of the most comfortable we slept on. However, the place does need a good deep cleaning- under beds and behind dressers- lots of little bugs, webs and dust. I'm sure it is a lot to clean between occupants. The kitchen is AMAZING and fully stocked. It was definite an experience to stay here and we enjoyed the accommodations. We recommend trying it out!

Building camaraderie
We (12 coworkers) came together for some training and much needed R&R, and we couldn’t be happier with this wonderful spot. The early century charm of this lodge was comfortable and relaxing, and the lake view was spectacular. The professional kitchen allowed the chefs on our team to create meals that won’t be forgotten. We will definitely go back again!

We were looking for a large space to accommodate the entire family and this lodge was perfect. It is historic and rustic which we all loved. The kitchen and dining areas were great for our group of 13. Sunrises on the lake were incredible. Communication with Bill was always quick. We all want to come back!

A must stay
We are a nonprofit who is working on the bootleg fire cleanup. We originally were going to stay in hotel rooms, but decided to look into the possibility of staying in a home. The lodge is the perfect place for us. We needed many rooms and the fact that each room has its own bathroom was a huge win for the team. Spacious with incredible views. It was great to find a place that we can all be together instead of split up. The booking process was super easy and Bill is very caring and kind. We will be back Many times in the future.

Even more than we expected
We had three generations and 8 people for a family vacation. The lodge was so serene, the beds were very comfortable. We enjoyed getting up and watching the sun rise over the lake. This was a perfect getaway after a year of Covid restrictions and many other challenges. The smoke was less at the lake than everywhere else we had been with all of the unfortunate wildfires. There is plenty of space in and out of the lodge for everyone. The quality of the historic lodge is amazaing and we enjoyed the paddle boats, horseshoes and more. Highly recommend for large gatherings.

Great Stay for family get together
We booked the place for our annual family get together . We had a large group of 6 families with kids of all ages and this place was perfect . The rooms were spacious with ample washrooms . The washrooms are huge as well . There was ample space for get together and games . The property also had nice outdoor games and also had a boat dock with boats which we had quite a bit of fun . The location is great for transit to both crater lake , Zipline adventures and Klamath falls . The owners were super responsive to any issues and took care of them in no time . The only downside if any was the kitchen could have some additional vessels for cooking. However there is ample cups , bowls etc to support a really large group . Thanks to bill and team for making our stay a pleasant one .

Great Family Getaway
Comfort Point is a fantastic place to get away and unwind. It is a large house on a good sized piece of property that is lakefront. We only had 10 people with us, but it could easily handle twice that. The views from the back of the house are amazing, with the lake and mountain views. The lodge is really a special place. You really get a sense of what it must have been like to stay there when it was first built 100 years ago. The living space is large and spread out, so even with a large group there would be spaces for several groups to hang out. Some things to consider: We rented the main lodge, but they do rent out another small cabin on the property. It was rented when we were there, and privacy was not an issue with the other renter. The only shared space was the boat dock, which had plenty of room for everyone's toys. The lake is not a swimming lake. The algae is very thick and I read that at times there can be issues swimming in it. With that being said, it was not a problem for us and we spent a lot of time on the water paddleboarding. It was a quiet and peaceful lake and the water was like glass all day. We saw many pelicans and eagles while we enjoyed the water. The mosquitoes came out in full force at night (August). We could stay out until dusk with deet, but after that we had to head inside. The house was a comfortable temperature the whole time we were there. We opened the windows at night and used fans, and were fine. Things to do: - Paddleboarding - water was glass all day. The Ledge, located in Klammath Falls, delivered for a small fee. - We rented a paddleboat at Harriman Springs Resort, which is very close to the house. The owner was very helpful and gave us a good deal. He even let us dock the boat at the house overnight, which made it very convenient to take it out first thing in the morning. The resort has a nice looking bar and restaurant, but unfortunately it was closed due to Covid-19. Crater Lake - This was a must do, we hiked down to the water and were able to swim. It is spectacular, about an hour drive. We did several other local hikes that were also fun. Fishing - We didn't, but were told that the lodge sits on one of the best spots on the lake. Shopping - The town of Klammath Falls was a 25-30 minute drive away. We stocked up before we got there and only had to make one run into town. There is a small market nearby that has some essentials as well. We loved it and hope to go back.

Idyllic setting for family getaway
We had a large family gathering for my father-in-law's 80th birthday, and the owners and property did not disappoint. Bob and Marie are wonderful hosts and excellent communicators. They were super responsive to all our inquiries. The lodge is spacious and ideal for large groups with children. The kitchen is great for making family meals. The views are amazing; almost every room has views of the lake. Make sure to soak in the views at night; the reflection of the moon on the lake is breathtaking. The lake was great for taking the paddle boats out, but not suitable for swimming. Lake of the Woods is only about a 10-15 minute drive if you're looking for a place to swim. Overall, we feel super lucky to have found this lodge and look forward to coming back.
