Beautiful location, dated property.
The location of this property is nothing short of spectacular. The property however was disappointing. The owners have tried to maintain the property in the light of its age but sadly the world has moved on since the 1960's. The downstairs bathroom and toilet are a bit daunting if needed in the middle of the night and the single facility for potentially 6 people required one to form an organised line for ablutions. The kitchen was of its time with the feeling generally was that one had gone back in time. As mentioned the location is wonderful and that does help explain the price but I think a makeover is required and the presence of a toilet upstairs should be considered essential. The owners were really informative about the surrounding area with many suggestions of things to do and visit and where to eat and drink. Perhaps they have tried to maintain the 50's feel and in this I think they have succeeded. The house was in no way damp but there was a musty smell all through the house despite the use of night storage heaters and the log burners. One appreciates that the remote location makes modern facilities such as dish washers and central heating a challenge, however, it would be lovely to have the facilities that matched and complimented the natural surroundings.

Dear Roger, Thank you for your review and for writing, "The location of this property is nothing short of spectacular!" We agree. Our most recent on-line reviews are all 5* and similar! "One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Walks close by and all wonderful. Anna was great. Highly recommend." "A delightful spot. A great house. Private. Quiet. Views over the loch to Skye and towards Glenelg. Lots of National Trust for Scotland walking right on the doorstep. Loved it." "This property is in a stunning location that is beautifully quiet and secluded but within good distance to amenities." The kitchen has a Smeg cooker and a one-year-old Grundig fridge-freezer. I'm glad that you enjoyed the Danish stoves too. We recently updated the bathroom. It has natural travertine tiles, modern led lighting, and a genuine £2000 cast iron bath - insulated from below! Of course there is fast-fibre internet and satellite TV. I'm glad that you also appreciated that we retained the traditional feel of the house.

Disappointing
Description of the view and surrounding area is accurate. However, the house is musty and damp, and cold. The bathroom downstairs is inconvenient with all the bedrooms upstairs, particularly if you have mobility issues. You have to be able to lift your leg about 2 feet in order to get into the bathtub. However, hot showers were great. The faucets in the bathroom and kitchen sinks are not mixed, so you either scald your hands or freeze them. And, the kitchen left much to be desired. Indeed, the fridge, stove and microwave were good, but the kitchen is very old and run down and the kitchen sink is very stained. And, I spent half an hour cleaning the coffee maker filter and filter holder before we could use them with confidence. Much to be done to make this property adequate for airb&b. I will not stay there again, and will not recommend it to friends.

Dear Taimoon, I was disappointed to read that you had difficulty getting into the bath! I think that 2 feet is not much to raise one's leg. We went to considerable expense to install a genuine, period six-foot enamelled cast iron bath just two years ago. The cost of the antique bath alone was £2000 and it is similar to that in the bedroom used by King Hussein of Jordan in a hotel not far north of here. It is not a small, cheap plastic or fibreglass bath, and is exactly as shown in the photographs in our listing. It is a full length proper bath and is set into natural travertine. I'm glad that you liked the additional hot showers! Yes! The taps (faucets) in the bath and kitchen are also genuine, proper taps. Taps of this vintage in the U.K. are separate - one gives hot and one gives cold. They are not mixed. Again, I'm glad that you liked the new kitchen fridge, stove and microwave. The sink is also a genuine original porcelain sink! We really have tried to preserve valuable and high quality architectural details and it is true that the sink is a little stained, but that is exactly how old porcelain kitchen sinks age. We could easily replace it with a modern one but then .... it would be gone and no-one would want that. I hope that answers your questions and you will be very welcome to stay again should you wish! The nice hot shower will stay of course - but so will the genuine large bath! I was surprised that you said you were cold. The west coast of Scotland is in the middle of a heat wave with temperatures as high as 30C. We actually had the heating on for you, but the guests after you asked us to turn it off. It is simply not possible for it to have been cold during your stay! You refer to one coffee maker. As you know, we provide three different coffee makers - an electric filter coffee machine, a caffetiere, and a traditional Italian Bialetti type machine. Most people know that in, Italy these are used daily and, like ours, acquire a patina of coffee stains from use. So you have the choice of three machines. I hope you enjoyed the wonderful views and the nice things you noted.

Peaceful, short stay
We only stayed for 3 nights but enjoyed our time. We easily commuted to Skye each day for wonderful hiking, returning to a cozy home by the water. Anna was wonderful, there was an issue with the internet, we didn’t even know was a problem until she reached out with a plan to have it fixed. Before we returned from hiking she had dispatched her local contact to fix the issue. We loved the efforts Anna took to maintain the original feel of the home, while updating where necessary - best shower!!! Thank you for having us.

Exterior was inviting. All ended at front door. Interior looks like it was Furnished from Salvation Army on a bad day. Bathroom on ground floor, all bedrooms one flight up. Majorly inconvenient. Downstairs rooms cold all the time. 4 channels of BBC is not having TV. No other good reception. We’ve stayed at small boutique hotels for less. There should be honesty in advertising. This was a major disappointment.

A learning experience with electrical appliances and heaters. My sister and I figured it out trial and error we perservered. The old wood fire stove was nice. the space heaters were not efficient enough in the upstairs. Luckily we are hearty women with camping knowledge . Beautiful spot. Very quiet , serene , private.

Had a pleasant week
Blythswood is a comfortable and homely cottage with stunning views in a peaceful location. The lounge and dining room had fabulous views and were very comfortable. We enjoyed being able to walk down to the loch and to access the Lochalsh Woodland walks. It is also a very convenient location for getting out and about to different places. The kitchen was dated but clean and well equipped although some of the equipment did seem a tad shabby and would benefit from replacing eg the plates & bowls were fine, but the mugs were just a random mixture of old and well used ones, as was the cutlery. The bathroom was fine for us, but older, less mobile people may struggle getting in and out of the bath for a shower as it is quite high up. The access track and gateweay felt quite narrow and initially slightly unnerving. However, we enjoyed our stay and would return .

Blythswood Cottage July 2019
Great property and location. Just as expected. However the beds were very uncomfortable for a weeks stay! The mattresses were thin and the double beds low and creaky! The one bathroom downstairs is an inconvenience, but we knew it would be when we booked. We would love to book again if new good quality beds are to be provided.

Dear Richard, I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and would like to return. This is why reviews can be so useful - thank you very much! Blythswood has been very much in demand this year and fully booked. So it could well be that one or both of the beds need attention - I don't think our housekeeper would notice that. They are quite recent and so I think they probably don't need to be actually replaced, but something might have worked loose. We do provide modern firm mattresses and most of our guests like these. We think that good mattresses are important and as we go to Blythswood ourselves in three weeks, we shall definitely look at that and if either a bed or a mattress (or both) needs to be replaced we'll simply do that and I'll let you know. With best wishes, Anna

Lovely location, bit nitpicky
We generally really loved this house- it sits in a beautiful garden, overlooking the loch (it's not right on the waterfront). Great garden for dogs, and lovely short walks in the woodland next door. Really close to Kyle and Skye. Only real gripes- for this price would expect all linen included, as well as electric charges. I don't want to read metres and calculate charges on my holiday! The "charge sheet" was also the first thing i read on walking in, which is not v friendly. Even just add a wee bit onto the price and include it- makes it less nitpicky. In general tho, really lovely place, would recommend it.

Dear Rona, Thanks very much and I'm delighted that you loved the house and garden! Sorry for the gripes. Let me explain. The reason is simple. The house is quite large and accommodates from 2 to 7 people. If we just average out the electricity usage summer and winter, then small groups in the summer would end up paying for large groups in the winter. We think that is unfair on smaller groups. As you say, it's quite cheap because you just pay the ordinary tariff as you would at home, and we have the cheap night rates for heating and hot water. So it is just fairer if we charge people for what they want to use, rather than adding a compulsory arbitrary amount. Hope that explains it and best wishes, Anna

Wonderful retreat with fabulous views!
Beautifully proportioned traditional stone house! All the rooms have views directly onto the sea, Skye and mountains. Well equipped kitchen, easy to work in. Plenty of cheap hot water, and lots of soft comfortable furnishing for relaxing evenings by either of the two wood-burning stoves. Large, well kept garden full of interesting plants with benches facing the sea. Great privacy if you ignore the pine martens, the seals and the occasional pair of porpoises! Within short ride of decent shopping, restaurants and local attractions. Will definitely try to come back, and recommend to friends.

Lovely location but...
The view of the loch is stunning and the house does have decent wifi speed but frequently refused to work with iPad and it didn't work with Kindles at all). The standard of equipment is not what we expected at this price point, nor would we normally expect to provide linens and towels (the owner did provide bedlinens in the end as ours did not fit the bed). The downstairs bathroom/toilet was inconvenient and the plumbing needs an overhaul. There is a damp feel to the property even during the heatwave we experienced. There are also no provisions for enjoying the garden (which while pleasant is behind the property and does not enjoy the view), no proper garden chairs or table and no BBQ.

Thank you very much! Yes, we agree – the view of the Loch is stunning and the Internet is good. Your review is different from any we have ever received since 1987, and it is difficult to know how to respond. For example the Homeaway review we received from our guests who stayed only 7 days after you is 5-STAR. So please check our other reviews. In reply to your points, what can I say? We agree that the large garden is behind the house - but can’t see that as a complaint! This is excellent because from all the rooms in the house, we look directly out over the sea. We have two garden benches situated at the front of the house and one below for exactly this reason – most of our guests love looking at the sea! The garden itself is lawn and laid out with species rhododendrons and paths to walk round, and so it doesn’t lend itself to barbeques. I’m glad that you found the internet was good (particularly since you apparently work in a software company). Yes, we have the most up-to-date BT router and have had no problems before you came. We have never had a comment from anyone trying to use a Kindle online – I really don’t know. To use a Kindle as a web browser online is definitely not recommended, and is not supported by Amazon. However I’ll check this myself with our Kindles next month when we go up ourselves. Yes, we have a downstairs bathroom and toilet which are convenient and ideal in case we have disabled guests. We have original water-colour paintings and art gallery photographs on the walls as you know, and I think your comment about a "damp feel" is simply wrong. We could not possibly leave water-colours and fitted carpets in a damp house! As regards plumbing, we have a new, modern stainless steel mains-pressurized hot water tank with cheap off-peak hot water. Our water system is thus modern and excellent, with good pressure for baths and shower. We have deliberately kept the original large cast iron bath together with its Edwardian fittings (see photograph). It is high quality and wonderful to lie full-length in! But we also installed a new additional electric shower. So the plumbing is in very good condition! The kitchen has a modern Smeg cooker, microwave oven, new Grundig fridge-freezer etc and is well equipped. Thank you very much for your comments and I hope that these detailed answers are a helpful response.

Lovely place with magnificent view
Convenient cottage at fantastic location. Great garden and splendid view. Interior is traditional and not modernized. Lot of opportunities for walking in different environments (coast line, forest, mountains). Nice to have a washing machine (no dish washer). Bath room also outdated but okay. One toilet in the bath room less convenient for larger groups.
