La Laguna Vacation Packages

This historic city is renowned for its well-preserved architecture and its grid-like design, which was used as a model for the Spanish colonies in Latin America.

The UNESCO-listed La Laguna, officially San Cristóbal de la Laguna, is known for its historic churches, ancestral houses and well thought-out town plan. Examine the neat grid layout, which influenced the Spanish colonial settlements in Latin America. Admire the many historic buildings, which date from the 16th to 20th centuries and include Mudéjar, neoclassical, modernist, rationalist and contemporary styles.

La Laguna was built on a plateau 1,804 feet (550 meters) above sea level. It was the epicenter of cultural and political power in Tenerife in the 1400s and is one of the earliest unfortified colonial towns. In the 16th century, the town was designed along a grid in accord with the canon of rationalist philosophy. This same model of town planning was used during the colonial conquest of Latin America.

Explore the town on foot to best appreciate its evocative streets. Start at the Plaza del Adelantado and see the magnificent Town Hall. Make your way along Calle Carrera and examine the pastel-colored façades of elegant urban mansions, such as the Capitanes Generales, the House of the Alhóndiga and the House of the Corregidor. When your feet begin to tire, stop for a break in a café on the Plaza de la Concepción.

The town has a collection of exquisite religious sites, including the iconic church tower of La Concepción, the neo-Gothic Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the Hospital and Church of Nuestra Señora and the Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna. Inspect the magnificent Baroque altarpieces and lavish interior of the Convent of Santa Catalina.

Make your way to Calle San Agustín to find the stately Lercaro Palace, home to the Museum of the History of Tenerife. Inside, exhibitions displaying various documents, maps and artifacts trace the history of the island.

La Laguna’s culinary specialties, which include fresh seafood, potato dishes and mojos (sauces), are held in high regard. For dessert, try a pastry with pumpkin filling or sweet potato with almonds.

Located in the south of Tenerife, La Laguna is a 10-minute drive from the Tenerife North Airport.
