Las Caritas, which literally translates to “The Faces,” was discovered following the European colonization of the island of Hispaniola. Visit Las Caritas today and learn about its alternative moniker, Trono de Enriquillo (“Enriquillo’s Throne”), which derives from the legendary Taino leader who used this cliff-face as a headquarters. Take the marked walking trail to reach the cliff, which is located north of Enriquillo Lake. Photograph the strange and intriguing patterns that protect the memory of these ancient Indians in weathered stone. Photograph dramatic ocher scenery and rock arches that dot the landscape. Enjoy scenic vistas of the lake. Look for local rhinoceros iguanas that warm themselves on rocky outcrops in the midday sun. Ask locals for a tour of Isla Cabritos, an island in the lake’s center. Las Caritas is a 1-hour drive northwest from Barahona, a city on the Dominican Republic’s south coast. The walking trail to the cliff-face is a little steep, but manageable for most ages and fitness levels. Overall, everything looked clean at first, but once we started noticing the little details, it didn’t feel like a deep clean had been done. For example, there was hair on the shower walls before any of us even used it, and the tub needed a quick rinse before showering. That being said, the staff was amazing!! They truly went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of, which we really appreciated. The location is also a huge plus it’s right across from a plaza with food, coffee, and even a really good taco stand at night. Despite the small cleaning issues, I’d definitely stay here again! (788 reviews) Everything about this place is just wonderful! It started with the staff on check in. The room was so nice and clean. The view was not right in front of the room, but still a great view. The housekeeping was fantastic. The health and spa check in was welcoming and the spa experience was a total removal from the everyday stress of life. My daughter and I also loved the pool and hot tub. Again the staff there was amazing as well. The beach is area from the beach and there is a boardwalk and fitness area to enjoy. Our Easter was extra special thanks to this experience.
