Enjoy the views of the countryside and tour the grand chambers and intriguing exhibits of this renovated castle from the Middle Ages.

As a majestic castle that rises from the undulating verdant terrain of the French countryside, the Mauvezin Château is the shining beacon of the region. It is a renovated relic from the Middle Ages that sheds light on its past through informative plaques and exhibits. Wander through this impressive castle to learn about its uses and architecture.

Lay down a blanket on a nearby grassy knoll for a picnic in view of the structure, with a backdrop of the Pyrenees Mountains. Capture photos of the castle, with its pointy spires and tall towers. Enter the large structure and climb along the walls for excellent views of the surrounding hills.

Make your way through the various exhibits to find out about the medieval era in this region. Inspect the armor and weapons on display in one room and see lifelike models at work in another. Examine the cannons dotted around the scenic grounds of the castle.

Browse the intriguing tomes and manuscripts on display in the Escòla Gaston Fébus library. It has historic books in English as well as a range of other languages. Gaston Fébus was an important 14th century count and viscount. He initially constructed the castle in 1380. Due to gradual disuse, the castle fell apart and its pieces sold off. It was restored centuries later.

Visit the castle daily from morning until early evening. There is an entrance fee for adults, while children and students get a discount. The castle has restrooms inside.

The Mauvezin Château is a little northwest of the heart of the village of Mauvezin, in southwestern France. Drive east from Lourdes for 22 miles (35 kilometers) to get here in about 40 minutes. You can leave your car in the free parking lot. See some of the nearby landmarks, including L’Arros River, the Escaladieu Abbey and the Ribière Water Mill.
