In 1896, Montpelier was the site of a bank heist by Butch Cassidy and members of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, Elzy Lay and Bob Meeks, who were supposedly trying to get enough money to bail out fellow gang member Matt Warner.

"This was our second time staying at butch’s hideout and will probably continue to stay here as long as we come to bear lake. We love the access to ideal beach (our family stays there), the arcade games are an added bonus - SO FUN! Check in and out was so easy and the hideout is so cozy- it feels as if I’m staying at grandma and grandpas cabin. Thanks for the 2nd year of a great stay!"
