Gijón’s popular city beach is an ideal setting for water sports, recreation and seaside relaxation all within easy access of urban amenities.

The Playa de Poniente is a wide artificial beach, with an expanse of yellow sand looking out over sheltered waters. One of the city’s most popular beaches, its location offers many opportunities for sailing and other forms of seaside recreation. Try your hand at water sports, splash in the sea, or lay on the beach and relax.

In the 1990s, as the nearby San Lorenzo beach grew overly crowded, the city of Gijón decided to increase supply to meet demand. What resulted was the Playa de Poniente, an artificial stretch of sand some 547 yards (500 meters) long and 77 yards (70 meters) wide that was established where some shipyards previously stood. Visit this beach to experience its calm waters, sheltered by aspects of the port district, and to enjoy its urban setting.

Take advantage of the wide promenade at Playa de Poniente to skate, cycle or jog by the sea. Watch beach volleyball or take to the court yourself. The beach’s sheltered location lends itself well to water sports, and opportunities abound to participate in sailing, canoeing and scuba diving. The calm water makes the learning curve a little easier for beginners.

The still conditions are ideal for children to swim in. There are also two playgrounds in the area. The beach provides a rescue lifeguard service through the summer, as well as facilities such as showers, toilets and sun beds. By the entrance to the beach you will find a range of bars and eateries.

The Playa de Poniente is a short walk from the city railway station and accessible by bus. There is car parking on site. The summer months see a range of cultural initiatives come to the beach, with concerts and musical marathons held on some evenings. Note that there are special access features and a multi-service building provided for people with mobility difficulties.
