Saxon Switzerland Vacation Packages
Saxon Switzerland is a scenic region defined by towering stone pillars, undulating meadows and rugged peaks. Castles overlooking riverside villages add an enchanting element to the mountainous landscape. Rent climbing gear from a tour operator and enter the Saxon Switzerland National Park to conquer some of its many mountain trails.
The national park is in the Bad Schandau region and has around 21,000 climbing routes in its 36 square miles (94 square kilometers) of diverse terrain. Stroll along the Painters’ Way trail, named for having inspired artists with its scenic vistas of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
On the western outskirts of the national park is the Königstein Fortress, which is perched on a forested hilltop overlooking the River Elbe. Visit the site, which was once a state prison, to explore an open-air military museum and one of Europe’s largest hilltop fortifications.
Nearby fortifications in this medieval realm include the elegant Weesenstein Castle within the valley village of Müglitztal and the 12th-century Stolpen Castle in the village of Stolpen further north.
The region is also known for its excellent spa facilities. For family fun, go to Mariba Freizeitwelt Spa in Neustadt. This water park, which is open year-round, features a giant slide and wave pool. Visit the spa town of Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel to see quaint buildings surrounded by forest.
Expect particularly cold winters and heavy snowfall on the summits of the national park. Summers are warm and pleasant. Be sure to try traditional cakes and pastries with coffee in Saxon Switzerland.
The region is in eastern Germany beside the Poland and Czech borders. Arrive at Dresden Airport, which is west of Saxon Switzerland, and get around by railway, bus or car.
Picturesque mountains and a range of majestic castles combine to make Saxon Switzerland a fascinating destination.
