Filled with eccentricities, diverse shops and traditional cuisine, Tamsui Old Street is a fascinating place to visit in the heart of Tamsui. Parts of its southern side open up, providing magnificent views of the Tamsui River just before it reaches the sea. Bring your whole family for the carnival atmosphere of this entertainment hub.

Play games and win prizes for your little ones. To take a break from sightseeing, stop at a café or restaurant and sample some of the local fish dishes. You’ll also find plenty of stalls and small shops serving traditional Xiaochi street food and snacks. Try the fried squid and pink guava fruit, among other specialties. Browse the souvenirs from the busy shops and admire the works of art being sold by street vendors here.

Climb the steps to a platform on an opening in the southern side of the street and lean over the rails to take photos and enjoy the views of the water.

As you continue northwest along the street, the shops eventually fall away and you’re left with an open vista of the water, dotted with quaint and colorful fishing boats. Spot the green mountains of northern Taiwan across the river and stay for the sunset.

Tamsui Old Street is one block inland from the Tamsui River, in the heart of the town of Tamsui. Note that it is right beside the Tamsui Ferryboat Wharf, where you can travel across to the Bali Left Bank. From the center of Taipei, drive north for 15 miles (24 kilometers) to arrive here in about 1 hour.

Most of the shops along this lively street open from morning until about midnight. Make your way around the area to see some of the neighboring sights, such as Lover’s Bridge, Bali Old Street and the Tamkang University Maritime Museum.
