We booked the Windhoek Hilton at the end of 17 days driving around Namibia. The reason for the choice - the facilities. We had been looking forward to roof top swims, long steams and some spa time. What a disappointment to find that the pool and the wellness centre were closed. I’m sure the refurbishment was needed, but I think it very unfair that we were not informed beforehand. This work was obviously organised months ago, plenty of time to inform guests of the issue.
We had a cold room - apparently some rooms could only be cooled, others warmed. Namibia was 2 degrees that morning, cooling was not required! We were moved to a ‘warming’ room but the toilet door would not stay closed (10 cm gap), neither would the shower door – causing a wet floor, followed rapidly by a slip, a bruised toe and a sore back!
Having dietary requirements meant we emailed several weeks ahead and were told they would not be a problem – 2 vegans, one with a gluten intolerance. Not a problem? What a joke! It took 4 visits from room service and a trip to the kitchen just to get milk for tea/coffee. Despite promises, gluten free bread/pastries did not appear. The head chef was very helpful, but our second evening another chef who, I think, had never met a vegan, gave us a meal I could have bettered when I was 12. The only veg. on offer was the same as those for breakfast!
The staff were lovely. The organisation behind them, amateurish.
