Set in the middle of Cabo Frio, Aguas Square is a prime spot to start your visit to this beautiful beachside community. From here, easily access the neighborhood’s many attractions, from several gorgeous beaches to the boardwalk.
For a day in the sun or in the waves, visit Forte Beach, a 4.6-mile (7.5-kilometer) white sand beach in front of sparkling aquamarine water. Go snorkeling in the clear water, where you’ll see colorful fish and might even glimpse a sea turtle. Head to the nearby boardwalk for shopping and dining.
Take a break from the beach and visit the 17th-century São Mateus Fort. Hike up to the rocky point to view the fort ruins and war cannons and gaze out over the gorgeous beach view.
Don’t miss Dunas Beach, known for its cleanliness and irresistible blue water. Shallow tide pools formed at low tide are fun to explore for the tiniest of marine life. If you’re traveling with young children, consider Conchas Beach, 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) from the city center. Let the little ones try fishing and kayaking or climb the beachside hills to discover natural pools.
Take a boat ride out from the Cabo Frio Canal to Papagaios Island for a daytrip. Spend all day snorkeling, swimming and seeking tropical birds. Plan to hop back on the boat before nightfall because the island has no accommodations.
Culture-seekers will enjoy the Charitas for its extensive modern art collection. Learn about regional history through photos and paintings. Move on to the Casa-Atelie Carlos Scliar Museum, known for its antique furnishings and a collection of more than 150 pieces by artists such as Aldo Bonadei, José Pancetti, Alberto da Veiga Guignard, Glauco Rodrigues and Anna Letycia Quadros.
