Deep, blue seas are the highlights of this top Japanese destination, famous for diving, snorkeling and a mix of Okinawan and American culture.

Sunny Central Okinawa is renowned for its blend of Japanese and American cultures, known as Chanpuru, named for an iconic local food speciality. This international vibe is largely due to the existence of the United States Kadena Air Base and several other U.S. military facilities on the island. Visit the lively American Village in Chatan, pottery studios in Yomitan and spectacular diving in Cape Maeda for richly rewarding experiences.

Lovers of pottery and ceramics will enjoy pastoral Yomitan, also known as the Village of Pottery. The huge, nine-step kiln, Yuntanza Gama, was built in the 1970s by the Shinman Yamada artisan group, leading to the current village setting. Today, several step kilns shared by resident crafters are always open to visitors. Explore local galleries and pottery workshops. Stay in the region to watch the sunset from Cape Zampa.

Move underwater in Onna Village at Cape Maeda, Okinawa’s most popular diving and snorkeling spot. Look over the East China Sea then take the stairs down the cliffside to the clear waters before venturing to the famous Blue Cave. The cave is accessible year-round to even the most inexperienced divers.

In Chatan and Mihama American Village, shop, dine and listen to music until the wee hours. Relax on the sand and have a barbecue at Sunset Beach. Take a ride on the SKYMAX 60 Ferris wheel, enjoy live concerts at night and watch a Japanese or American film at the movie theater. There is an air of nostalgia here for military residents and a fun diversion for visitors.

Visit Central Okinawa’s several historical sites, including the ruins of Katsuren, Nakagusuku and Zakimi Castles, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Explore traditional residences, dance performances, martial arts and cooking at the Ryukyu Mura village.

Central Okinawa lies between Urasoe to the south and Matsuda to the north. Fly into Naha Airport from mainland Japan, including Tokyo and Osaka. Local transportation is mainly by car, bus and taxi.
