Soak in the natural thermal water and admire the architecture and period décor of the bathhouse that inspired the wonderful drawings of the animated film Spirited Away.

As one of the main attractions in Matsuyama, Dōgo Onsen is an elegant bathhouse fed by natural hot springs. It has a rich history, having been built in the late 19th century, before hosting the imperial family. Lose yourself in the wooden labyrinth of steps and corridors in this enigmatic and rustic haven.

Try the Kami no Yu (Bath of the Gods) on the first floor, before heading upstairs to the Tama no Yu (Bath of the Spirits) bath. Both are made from stone and divided into male and female areas. Legend claims the hot springs healed the injured leg of a heron. Look for depictions of the bird in the various paintings and sculptures dotted around the site.

After relaxing in the naturally hot water, dry off and explore the rest of the passageways and rooms. Find yourself in the light and airy tatami rooms, where large mats are draped across the floors. Try Botchan Dango candy and traditional crackers with your friends in the charming closed-off rooms.

Embark on a guided tour of the bathhouse’s Yushinden section, where the imperial family first stayed during their 1899 visit. Study the ornate décor and features that were once thought fit for emperors.

See the Botchan no Ma room that was a famous haunt of illustrious Japanese novelist Sōseki Natsume. The bathhouse also has a museum area showcasing antiquated features including old wooden tickets and original documents.

Note that fees for the bathhouse vary, depending on the activities you choose. The attraction opens daily from early morning until late evening.

Find the Dōgo Onsen in Dogomachi in the northeastern corner of Matsuyama. Ride to the easternmost part of the city’s tramline and get off at Dōgo Onsen, a few minutes’ walk away. While you’re in the area, visit the Yuzukijo Museum, the Botchan Karakuri Clock and the Yu Shrine.
