"I recently stayed at this hotel and, unfortunately, it wasn’t the most comfortable experience. The room itself was just okay—basic but functional. However, it didn’t feel very clean. There was an awful smell in the room that never went away. There were visible marks on the walls, a stale smell, and the bathroom could definitely use a more thorough scrubbing. What really put me off, though, was the general atmosphere. Some of the other guests seemed… off. A few were lingering in the hallways at...

"This is hands down one of the prettiest and coolest properties you can stay in, in rural Portugal. The property, room and pool and service was amazing, but the town itself situated in is also just one of the coolest experiences. So many handmade items included in your stay and available to purchase. The host is amazing, super friendly and laid back. The grounds were beautiful, unique and has so much character. Foz Côa Story House

10/10 Excellent

"Ultra modern hotel . Terrific staff who was everywhere to make our stay more enjoyable including preparing a fabulous breakfast early to meet our schedule They arranged transfer from Pocinho to the hotel, then the coa museum and back to Pocinho. Our taxi driver-Roy-was always on time and very helpful. Taxi company was Jorge …."

Casa da Avó - Turismo de Habitação

10/10 Excellent

"A delightful historical villa, which has held its old charm with the decor and furnishings. A very homely feel with a goid continental style breakfast. Coffee machine provided both caffeine teddy and decaffeinated coffee. There was a very good selection of teas. In the heart of the small town; parking was on street and felt safe, even for the motorcycles."

Casa do Rio Wine Hotel - Vallado

10/10 Excellent

"Our stay at Casa do Rio was exceptional. There are 10 rooms with stunning views of the Douro River and vineyards. Our room was spotless and tastefully decorated, and we were welcomed with a plate of fresh figs and white port and all ingredients to make portonics. The grounds are lovely with an infinity pool overlooking the river and two semi private fresh water dunking pools. The food and was outstanding! We made our dinner selections earlier in the day and were treated to an exquisite 3 course meal complete with dessert and wine service. We were served a breakfast buffet every morning with fresh fruit and juices, cured meats and cheeses, an abundant offering of homemade breads, pastries and cake of the day. There were also eggs and meats prepared to order. The staff and service completed our stay. They were genuinely warm and gracious. From Felipe, the manager who greeted us upon our arrival, to the Daniel and Carlos, our food servers for dinner, to all of the other staff who contributed to our amazing experience. Wow!!"

The best area to stay in Escalhão is directly within the village center, particularly around the main square and its connecting streets.

This central part of Escalhão offers a genuine experience of village life. You'll find a few local cafes and restaurants, and the village's historic church is a prominent landmark. The streets are narrow and winding, leading to views of the surrounding countryside and the Douro River. Couples looking for a peaceful retreat will appreciate the relaxed pace and the opportunity to disconnect.

For those interested in exploring the natural beauty and the Douro River, staying near the riverfront offers convenient access to walking paths and viewpoints.

When is the best time to go to Escalhao?

The best time to visit Escalhão for comfortable weather and outdoor activities is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months.

You'll find it's a great time for travelers who appreciate comfortable touring conditions.

For those interested in local harvest festivals and culinary experiences, late September and October are particularly rewarding. This is when the grape harvest often takes place in the surrounding Douro wine region, offering unique opportunities to experience local traditions and taste regional products.
