Minnis Bay is an interesting place to begin your discovery of Birchington. This inlet along the shoreline comes recommended by fellow travelers, but it isn't the only spot to see here. Allow some time for other sights like Dreamland, Westwood Cross Shopping Centre, and Winter Gardens to really enjoy what the area has to offer.

Beaverbrook is beautiful. But service (despite plenty of staff) is simply too inconsistent/ poorly trained for the price. Examples include a waitress in the deli being harsh with our 4 year old for sitting in her knees to reach the table, being told to wait 2 minutes for our table but being forgotten for 20 minutes, a room which was much too hot (an resulted in an uncomfortable night) despite having asked for it to be turned down (and told that it had) and promises of things being sorted which weren’t. All left a slightly sour taste.

Reculver

Reculver Towers

Reculver Towers
The history of the airfield from 1916 and it's use by the RAF and civil airlines. Manston started its Aviation days as a Royal Naval Station in 1916, with a base at Westgate Bay for seaplanes. The early airfield was on the area now occupied by the passenger terminal. By 1917 Manston airfield had grown to include four underground hangars, its own railway line to Birchington, a power station to generate electricity, barracks for 3,000 men and even an indoor swimming pool. After WW1, training of airmen in airframe maintenance and engine repairs was taught in the School of Technical Training. 1940 and WW2 brought the Battle of Britain. Barnes Wallis arrived in 1943 to test his bouncing bomb at nearby Reculver, before the Dam busters carried out their famous raid. Roland Beaumont arrived with the Typhoon which came to be the most successful ground attack aircraft in WW2.

You can spend an afternoon studying the exhibits at RAF Manston History Museum during your trip to Minster. Visit the area's stunning cathedral or amble around its waterfront.

The ruins at Reculver are managed by English Heritage but are free to visit. Originally a Roman fort built against Saxon raids. Later an Anglo-Saxon monastary before becoming a parish church in the 12th Century. Fine views and lovely walks along the coast. There is a local pub for refreshments too!
