Visit a historic fort that bears witness to this Bahrain city’s militaristic and royal past and offers incredible views over the valley below.

See the 17th-century Riffa Fort, or Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort, presiding over the desert valley between East Riffa and West Riffa. The fort was historically used both defensively and as the primary residence of the ruling Al-Khalifa royal family. By the 20th century, the fort was in ruins and was restored and opened to the public.

Visit the clay fort to explore its towers and courtyards and get a sense of traditional Bahraini architecture. Outside, a dry moat surrounds the fort. Inside, find programs and exhibits that present the history of the Al-Khalifa family as well as showcase the beautiful interiors and impressive engineering feats that helped to reconstruct the fort.

Investigate the circular and rectangular towers, as well as the three elaborate courtyards. From various vantage points, visitors can overlook the desert valley and on to Manama. Stop in the Saffron Café for a Arabic snacks or drinks. Dusk offers views of sunsets and illuminated walls of the fort.

Explore several other spots near the fort. Learn about the history of the kingdom at the Bahrain Military Museum. See military uniforms, medals, royal portraits and tanks, planes and other military gear. Al-Hunainyah Park offers shaded walkways and extensive children’s playground equipment.

While in Riffa, shop for souvenirs and local handicrafts at Riffa Bazaar, or Souq al-Riffa, in West Riffa and the Bukuwara Street Market in East Riffa. For a more modern shopping experience, head to the commercial center of East Riffa to browse the shops of Emma Mall and the Lulu Hypermarket Mall. The city also offers sports facilities, including Bahrain National Stadium, where you can watch a local soccer match, and the 18-hole championship Royal Golf Club, open to members and visitors.

In West Riffa, look for the famous Riffa Clock Tower in the center of the neighborhood. It is typically lit up at night and ornately decorated for holidays, such as Eid.

Find Riffa Fort 11 miles (18 kilometers) from Manama. Entrance is free. It’s easy to get around the city, and to the fort, via public transportation or taxi.
