The castle was built in the Gothic style and has a heptagonal shape, the walls are reinforced with round towers at the corners.

The statue of Nuno Alvarez Pereira is located in Portel in a small square in front of the castle entrance. Nuno is the legendary Portuguese hero who commanded the Portuguese army at the Battle of Aljubarrot, which ended in the defeat of the Castilians. This defeat made Juan I abandon claims to the Portuguese throne. In 1404, he donated his entire fortune to the Carmelite Monastery. After the death of his wife, he adjoins the Carmelite order and on August 15, 1423 he leaves for the monastery. There he lived until his death. The veneration of Nonia Alvarez-Pereira as a saint began immediately after his death. Among the people he was nicknamed the Holy Connable.
