This place is magical- the only noise you hear are natural ones (the frogs at night were wonderful), and that peace of mind is deeply soothing. Also, Dennis has the best starfruit I’ve ever had!

A very relaxing stay
I had a wonderful time at the dome cottage! Staying an hour south of Kona let me feel like I was being immersed in Hawaii, while also being a great location to make trips to Volcano or Kona. I enjoyed cooking dinner while watching the sunset on the ocean, and listening to the sounds of birds and frogs outside my windows. Truly a peaceful stay!

Paradise!
Effortless process from start to finish. Dennis, Jan, and Bernie (world's greatest good boy) made our first trip to Hawaii magical! Cottage is beautifully kept, well appointed, has everything you need. We enjoyed that the location was well away from busier areas. We loved getting in the car for a day of fun exploration and then returning to our quiet home for the night. The beds are SO comfy, too. The sunsets from the porch deck are simply gorgeous- a must see. We simply had the most wonderful time. Mahalo, Dennis, Jan, and Bernie!

Excellent property
We were totally amazed at the surroundings of this property. A mini farm with lots of fruit trees - and a perfect "getaway" for privacy, solitude and tropical splendor. The extra added attraction was the eruption of Mauna Loa on the day before we arrived! How exciting! I would definitely recommend this home for a peaceful, private vacation - but be prepared for a little distance from any major shopping areas. It was perfect for our needs - but for those who want to be "where the action is", you will be in for a surprise. Still, well worth the peaceful surroundings that we were hoping for.

Wonderful stay!
This was a great place to stay. It was peaceful, clean, and had an ocean view! It was as advertised and wonderful to have morning coffee on the deck looking at the ocean. Space works very well for two people. Easy to contact Dennis and we also loved eating the shared fresh fruit and tomatoes grown there! We liked making toast the old fashioned way on stove top! All the nature sounds at night made us feel more connected to natural Hawaii. There are extras provided like coolers and beach items. Recommend this place for a unique and pleasant stay.

The property was beyond fantastic! I was looking for a few days of peace and tranquility, away from the concrete jungle of Oahu, and I found my new little slice of heaven. The cottage is wonderful, the neighborhood is so quiet and peaceful I didn't want to leave. Wonderful little place I can't recommend high enough. I will be going back.

Just perfect place: had amenities I was looking for without going overboard. Cute place, very clean and the Sunsets were as expected: all great views. All kinds of birds singing and enjoying the area. Saw even a pair of Pheasants !!! Nights music was the best to let us know we were in the tropics. Our lullaby music were the happy Coqui's. Just what the doctor ordered. Loved our stayed.

Great place to unwind!
Love this cottage and property - slightly rustic with its solar power and composting toilet, but very comfortable with strong internet service for working remotely over VPN. Beautiful and peaceful, it's a bit of a drive to groceries, beaches, restaurants, and other sights, but much nicer for someone who wants privacy and a non-resort experience. Eat breakfast with geckos on the deck, go to sleep to chirping birds and frogs, and enjoy fresh fruit grown by the hosts. Will definitely be back if we can!

Amazing Stay on the Big Island
Great little cottage to get away from the busyness of more traveled areas in Hawaii. A bit of a drive from Kona but had everything you’d need to live comfortably for a while. Views were simply unmatched and he surrounding area was beautiful and full of lush greenery as well. Local coffee plantations serve local brews which was a real treat. Would recommend bringing/using bug spray since there were quite a few mosquitoes. But overall a very excellent place to stay! Mahalo.

Work and play stay.
Overall things were very good at the property. It was quiet and quite comfortable. We both had to do some distanced work, and were originally worried about connectivity, but there were absolutely no problems with it. The owner also suggested a nearby, little used beach that ended up being better than the bigger public ones we visited, especially when about 2 dozen dolphins came and hung out! The refridgerator is tiny, and since the property is a bit of way from stores that made shopping for an extended stay more of a challenge. Also, some of the reference materials on-site (especially about hiking) are very outdated. But overall, I'd definitely recommend this property over a hotel!

We enjoyed our stay at this off the grid dome home that is great for the environment. We had all the amenities, including Netflix if you want to watch a show while you are there. The location is remote so if you are looking for night life this would not be the place. We are hikers so went to the black sand beach a few times. Explored Volcano National Park and greeen sand beach.

Lovely getaway off the beaten path
We had a lovely 3 nights in the “dome” near Miloli’i. The design of the place is unusual and interesting, and it was perfect for a couple’s getaway with a sort of studio vibe (but with plenty of space and some separation to the different areas). We cooked several full meals in the kitchen, enjoyed the lanai with the view (and some curious geckos!), and cracked a bunch of macadamia nuts the “Hawaiian way” (two stones!). They were delicious, and Dennis and his wife also brought us a box of fresh fruits from their various trees, which was very kind. The place is down a windy road toward Hawaii’s last fishing village (apparently), which feels very different than staying in Kona or another more touristy place. We did venture down the road through the village one morning to get to Honomalino Beach, which we’d recommend (we were the only ones there on a Monday morning). The house’s composting toilet was a new experience for us but totally fine; hardly different from normal. Only complaint about the whole stay was that the shower water alternated between hot and cold randomly at times, but there’s plenty of hot water so it’s not a huge deal. Overall great find for a getaway and so nice to be away from the crowds. Easy drives to Captain Cook/Two Step, green sand beach, and black sand beaches.

Miloli'i cottage is a private gem
We stayed at this charming cottage for a week in Jan 2020. Even after the many positive reviews, it exceeded our expectations! If you are looking for quiet and privacy off the beaten path (it is a bit of a drive from everywhere), you have found your rental. Dennis and Jan were super helpful hosts who thoughtfully provided every little necessity. As mentioned in other reviews, seasonal fruit was available from their bountiful (and beautiful) garden. The included snorkel gear and boogie boards were a plus, too. The only limitation I can mention is that the small fridge did not work well when overstuffed with too much food! :O We miss hearing the birds at night and the cute green geckos on the patio. Aloha!

Miloli'i... Peace, Beauty & No Ka Oi Guest (The Best) Experience
Mahalo nui to the Kent's for their warm hospitality and for sharing their very special geodesic cottage with us. We are a kamaaina (from Hawaii) couple who chose this lovely location to celebrate a birthday staycation in a venue known for its dryer climate. Overall we loved the seclusion of the location, the elevation for it's cool breezes, the extraordinary beauty of living nestled among a fruit bearing orchard (oranges, mango, pomegranate, papaya, mac nuts etc) and the dine out deck perfect for a romantic dinner for two or breakfast gazing out to the clear blue skies and vast Pacific blue ocean. The Kent's attention to detail in providing for their guests every need did not go unnoticed. As avid cook's we appreciated the well appointed kitchen where every gadget, utensil, stove top toaster, coffee drip, blender, high end knife set and essential spices were all within easy reach for this petite wahine (woman). Everything we needed in our home-away-from-home was thoughtfully provided including beach towels, extra pillows, blankets as well as a detailed guide containing recommendations of sights to see during our stay. The quiet vibe in the cottage and the unique orchard setting combined with the stunning tropical views was medicine to soothe my soul and provided a much needed respite. We are seasoned travelers having traipsed through the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, NYC and the serenity of the vineyards of Petaluma. The geodesic cottage ranks in the top three of places we would love to return to visit. Mahalo to the Kent's for creating this oasis and permitting us to enjoy all of its offerings. Hey Dennis we loved meeting Mele and exploring the orchard. Maybe a French Press would be a good add to the kitchen arsenal. To fellow sojourners scrolling through the many VRBO listings for the perfect Hawaii experience we heart this Miloli'I gem.

Best Relaxing Hawaii Vacation
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights during our vacation. I loved the location because I had a view of the ocean from bed and no crowds or tourists around. Very peaceful experience. At night there were singing frogs and in the morning singing birds, which are all soothing to me (like a noise machine some use for sleeping). If you need silence to sleep bring ear plugs, because this place is so great you're going to want to stay here. We spent most of our time during the day at the Volcano Park & South Point, both an easy drive away on beautiful roads. The area has tons of coffee farms offering free samples. Further down the road (about a 10 minute drive) is a nice beach that really only had locals at it. A great choice if you want to experience Hawaii away from the crowds and have a more private time. The house itself was cozy without feeling small at all. I love the laval mural, the dome ceiling, and the switch that under-lit the dome with cool color lights. The water is all from rain collection and the power is from solar, which made me feel better about my carbon footprint (especially now a days where we really need to be thinking more about our impact). Honestly, if the listing hadn't mentioned it I would have never noticed, so if you're worried that solar & rain will somehow lessen your experience you are wrong. (Actually, I ended up staying in Kona later that week and had a terrible time and thought their water tasted off, so I really missed this place.) The owners are so nice and just down the street should you need anything. They gave me great advice on some sites I was interested in and even offered me fresh fruit from the many fruit trees on the property. Nothing like starting a sunny day sitting on the deck, sipping coffee, and eating a fresh mango as the birds sing. Some geckos even appeared from smelling the fresh mango which was very entertaining to us. I cannot recommend this place enough. Hands down our favorite place to stay in Hawaii on the Kona side. I was sad to leave at the end of our stay and missed it immensely when I was in my next hotel.

It couldn’t have been more perfect of a getaway
We always go on vacation to escape our busy life but this is the first time that we’ve really experienced a different pace of the island. The cottage was far enough away from the the main tourist areas but close enough to drive back and forth to during the day. The dome on top made the space feel much bigger, the layout was well planned and there wasn’t a shortage of activities suggested in their welcome binder. I woke up to smoke cigars and drink coffee on the porch every morning while watching the sun peak around the corner. We went to the beach every day since there are beaches in every direction from the cottage. This vacation was exactly what we needed. Oh, and you can’t forget about all the fresh fruit that was in the yard surrounding the house. The next time we visit the big island, we are definitely staying here again. Thanks for having us!

Dissapointed
We had been looking forward to our Hawaiian vacation and reservation in Captain Cook for nearly six months. The volcano began erupting violently about a week before our trip, affecting air quality and causing residents nearby to evacuate. We contacted the homeowner when we heard the news to check to see if our place was still okay, as it is on the southern side of the island. We were assured that all of the volcanic activity was over 100 miles away. We noticed the thick vog our first morning but thought nothing of it. It was the same the next day. The local news was full of warnings about the volcanic particulates in the air. Since we were down-wind from the eruption site we were concerned. On our second evening, May 17th, we spoke with the homeowner and he said he had been farther up the hill earlier that day and had experienced trouble breathing, although denied the comment a few days later after we requested a refund. My wife and I discussed the situation later that night and decided that if the air up the hill was that bad then our air was being negatively affected too. We watched the local news later that evening and found out there had been a massive eruption that morning and trade winds would be blowing ash and airborne toxins in our direction. We made the choice to relocate to a safer location farther up the coast. We texted our host that evening to try to talk in person; texted again early the next morning, to notify him that we were checking out due to our health concerns and would be requesting a partial refund; and sent a detailed email, receiving zero responses. The next day we called and spoke with the homeowner. He said that we needed to contact a secondary company to request the refund (Evolve Vacation Rentals), even though we booked through VRBO. We went through the process with Evolve and they told us that it’s ultimately up to the homeowner. We were informed by Evolve that the homeowners decided NOTHING was fair, not even a cent. We stayed for three nights but paid for seven. The homeowner felt that because we were not evacuated, we could have stayed. Bear in mind that we are on vacation. This homeowner took advantage of us and the situation. We spoke to many other travelers who also changed reservations due to the volcano and had great experiences in working with their hosts. We are reasonable people and were willing to meet in the middle, no one wins in a natural disaster, but this host was not willing to offer anything.

Response from VrboOwner on Apr 1, 2020
Jennifer, we are very sorry for the issues you encountered on your vacation. It's our goal for all guests to have comfortable stays, and we regret that you did not feel your stay lived up to that standard. Safety is a top priority for all of our properties and the homeowner as well as the Hawaii Island Civil Defense determined the air quality did not pose any health concerns and therefore was suitable for guests to have an enjoyable stay. Here at Evolve, we help our owners with marketing - when you book an Evolve property you are still booking a vacation rental by owner who has the final say in regards to any kind of compensation. While this property has never received this kind of feedback, we do take your concerns seriously in an effort to provide the optimal experience for all guests. Please know that we have shared your feedback with the homeowner. Thank you for letting us know. Best, The Evolve Team

Excellent Stay!
My wife and I absolutely loved the cottage. We went there for our honeymoon! It was clean, quiet, with no neighbors or other tenants to worry about. Dennis is a gentleman and treated us in a first rate fashion. The place was well prepared and had everything we wanted. We both would recommend it to anyone who wants a peaceful rest. It is a little removed from any hustle and bustle and that is what we desired. Satellite TV and internet, kitchen (with a nice small fridge) beautiful bathroom with a large walk in shower. Outside is a beautiful deck to see the ocean from or sit and eat or have coffee. We hope to be able to come again. Thank you Dennis for the excellent experience! Jerry and Mimi.

Beautiful new built eco-friendly cottage with character!
We loved this cottage! It was beautiful, clean and well equipped! Off the grid solar and propane with a composting toilet seemed a bit intimidating at first, but was so easy and user friendly (not much different than standard). Lots of fruit trees on site, and the wonderful owners (Dennis and Jan) were only too happy to share their knowledge and fruit with us and the girls, who thoroughly enjoyed picking and eating fresh star fruit and loquats right off the trees. The host puppy was also a hit! We wished we could have stayed longer! Highly recommend! Just make sure that you stock up on some groceries on the way in at Kona or Hilo, as the closest grocery store is a bit of a hike. There is a wonderful local fresh fruit stand about 15-20 minutes down the road though.

This was, hands down, the best vacation rental experience we have ever had. Rarely does a place deliver more than is promised. We were looking for a place that was somewhat isolated and close to nature, without sacrificing comfort and this was perfect for us. The ocean views we're expansive and the night sky was unbelievable. Owners Dennis and Jan we're helpful and friendly without being intrusive. They regularly gave us fresh fruit from their orchard. Our only mild suggestions would be a chaise lounge and consistently hot water. This was an A++ experience!!

Exceeded all Expectations
When we booked this place we were a little unsure of what to expect with being off the grid, but we were so happy that we stayed here. I myself was concerned about having to go plug my hair dryer into the generator, but once Dennis showed us how to run the generator, it wasn't a problem. We are used to using a microwave and coffee maker all the time, but in the end we didn't miss them. Enjoyed the fresh fruit we were given and loved all the fresh macadamia nuts. We had fun cracking them with the rocks that were provided. The outdoor shower was great for when we got back from the beach. Bed was very comfortable. Kitchen was very useful. Had everything we needed. Liked the Mehe's Ka'u Bar and Grill close to the Ocean View Market (we had the fish plate for dinner, it was awesome). The Ocean View Market was a good place to stop for groceries. The Aloha Mix food truck was also a great place to eat. Stopped in at the Paradise Meadows Orchard and Bee Farm three times as we enjoyed the people who worked there, the coffee and the honey (it's on the way to South Point). Volcano National Park is a must visit. We loved the area and location of the cottage. Enjoyed the peace and quiet. A person can really drive anywhere from here. The hosts Dennis and Jan were wonderful. They were helpful when we needed it and we had great conversations. They do however respect your privacy. If we get a chance to come back to the Big Island, we will stay here again, only next time it will be for longer.
