Come to this attractive village for majestic Alpine scenery as well as all sorts of adventures and sports such as skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, hiking and climbing.

Although less well-known than its superstar neighbor Chamonix, Argentière is highly regarded for its Alpine sporting opportunities. Speed down the slopes in winter or wait until the snow-free summer to try climbing up the jagged rock faces of the Chamonix valley.

The village itself is in a majestic setting at the foot of the Argentière Glacier. For views of this immense glacier and the peaks that rise up around it, ride one of the town’s two cable cars. The Lognan cable car climbs to a high of 6,469 (1,972 meters), while the Les Grands Montets cable car ventures even higher into the rugged peaks, to a height of 10,827 feet (3,300 meters). Both offer excellent views.

In winter, the prime draw to the village is the Grand Montets Ski Area. Situated between 4,051 feet (1,235 meters) and 10,827 feet (3,300 meters), this ski area is known for its excellent quality of snow, with the ski season often lasting up until May. Zoom down the pistes, which are spread across three slopes. Experienced skiers can venture off-piste.

From Argentière, it’s also easy to access other nearby ski areas within Chamonix-Mont Blanc, such as the Brévent-Flégère, Balme Vallorcine, Chosalets, Savoy, Tourchet, Poya, Les Houches, Planards and Vormaine.

In summer too, outdoor activities abound. Try hiking in the AiguillesRouges National Nature Reserve, or go trail running, golfing and mountain biking. The truly adventurous may even consider attempting to summit the famous Mont Blanc.

After activity-filled days, return to the village, which is set at an altitude of 4,100 feet (1,250 meters). Stroll the streets lined with traditional buildings and admire the 18th-century Saint-Pierre d'ArgentièreChurch. Go inside to view the Baroque church’s gleaming golden tabernacle, which comes from Venice.

Find the village of Argentière about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Chamonix in the French Alps. To get here, ride the train to Argentière station.
