The Virginia Country Cottage: GREAT Location/Pet Friendly, 30 Acres, close I81

Discount for 7+ day stays. Our housekeeping activities entail an enhanced disinfection cleaning protocol. The Cottage is adjacent to the Appalachian Trail and Route #76 Biking Trail. Located in the East Coast Mountain Biking Capital Corridor of the Blue Ridge Mountains it is nestled on a 30 acre farm with access from the Town of Troutville, a designated Appalachian Trail Community. Easily accessible via I81, one mile from Exit 150B close to shopping and restaurants.
This 1940 farm house has been fully restored with all modern conveniences. The luxury bedding and fine furniture give the cottage a feel of a top Bed and Breakfast venue minus the breakfast. The Appalachian Trail is just a short walk from the cottage where a spectacular high meadow awaits with panoramic mountain views. The farm is enclosed by actively managed forestry sporting much wildlife including hives of honeybees. The orchard entails many heritage apple and pear trees. The Black Twig Garden is a ¼ acre enclosed organic working square foot garden for growing a variety of vegetables, berries, and flowers.
Local activities include hiking, biking, birding, fabulous dining, wineries, craft breweries, Greenfield Sports Center, Attic Productions, and historical sites within short driving distances. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the James River and boating on Claytor Lake are the preferred watersports. Hollins University, Roanoke College, Virginia Tech, and Radford University are easily reached via I81.
The Cottage has one formal Monticello inspired Chippendale porch and one casual porch outfitted with a gas grill. Campfire opportunities can be made available on top of the orchard overlooking the property. The first floor entails the Queen Size Bedroom with double sized closets, Full Bath with walk in shower, Dining Room, Kitchen with Nook, Living Room, Laundry room, and Den with game table/writing desk. The upstairs has a large King Size Bedroom with a walk in closet, a Twin Sized Bedroom with two beds, and another Full Bath with a skylight.

Wonderful Experience
I truly enjoyed staying at this property. My friend and I were on a research trip and spent a lot of time on the front porch working. WiFi was very strong and the home was fully furnished with everything we needed. We were even invited to pick fresh strawberries in the garden! We both really enjoyed ourselves and agreed when we have to do one more trip in VA we’ll be staying here again.

This is a wonderful little home with lots of charm. Reminds me of grandma's house. It is older and some floors are not even, but the bathrooms and the kitchen have been updated, new windows and heat/air system. We enjoyed the porches a lot. They have anything and everything you might need for your stay. Saw a deer and groundhog there. Grounds were beautifully kept. Would stay again.

Lovely property far exceeding our expectations
This property was wonderful! We were visiting the Roanoke area to attend a funeral and the Cottage was a wonderful retreat. The property had numerous outdoor areas to enjoy and the weather was beautiful. We also appreciated visiting with the owners and met their beautiful Labs. We would definitely recommend this property to others. We had no problems and all of our needs were met. Thanks Sybille and Mark!

Blue Ridge Retreat
We had a wonderful time staying at “the cottage”. My girls and I hiked the AT with easy access from the property, they also visited the “black twig” garden and loved taking a peek at the honey bees. The owners even set up a campfire for us to roast s’mores our last night. The house itself was close to kayaking, hiking, zip lining or just a drive on the parkway.

Country and Garden Delight
We had a very enjoyable and relaxing time at the Country Cottage! It truly felt like a home away from home and the hosts were helpful and available yet offered privacy. The house was clean and well-appointed and the garden offered fresh veggies for dinner prep. We cooked out, went on hikes, visited with family and had the quiet we needed to relax and appreciate nature in all of its glory. We plan to return to see the surrounding sites in the area. Much appreciation to Sybille and Mark!

Everything you can ask for
The cottage is lovely and relaxing, but the most impressive thing was the detail the owners typed out covering every single question you might ever have. I cannot image the time and thought it took to clearly explain and suggest things. I was blown away. The owners themselves were delightful and friendly and very willing to help with any of our needs; however, because of their planning and preparation, we didn't need anything at all. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in town.

What a pleasure it was to spend a week at this house and to become acquainted with Mark, Sybille, and the yellow labs they train as therapy dogs! The house itself is a gem, a beautifully renovated farmhouse that has been furnished and decorated with wonderful taste and a strong focus on the comfort of visitors. Our daughter and a friend are hiking the Appalachian Trail, which passes very nearby, and we brought them to the house for a day and night of rest, showers, laundry, and home-cooked meals (the kitchen is very well equipped). The setting is serenely idyllic and begs you to take walks. For us, the location was convenient for visiting Daleville, Roanoke, Salem, Buchanan, and Blacksburg, as well as a very pleasant winery in Troutville. Thank you, Mark and Sybille, for a week well spent! --Steve and Mary

Lovely little cottage close to the Appalachia Trail
The property was a little smaller than conveyed by the photos, especially the galley kitchen, which posed some challenges for a family of cooks :). We managed to have some wonderful meals and great times. We loved our hike on the AT even in the rain, and drove to Apple Orchard Falls for a long, absolutely wonderful hike Sunday. Do really plan to unplug when you stay here because wifi in these parts is slooow. But that's the whole point, isn't it? The host was extremely responsive and has equipped the cottage very well. An extra trash can in the kitchen would be a huge help given the narrow space and distance between the ends of the working surfaces, but everything else was top-notch and super clean! Thank you for all your help, Sybille!

Beautiful home and great location!
We stayed here for a long weekend in order to take our son on a college tour at Virginia Tech (about 45 minutes away), and to do some hiking in the area as well. We couldn't have been more pleased with everything! The house itself is spacious, quiet, and thoughtfully furnished - there are plenty of soft seating and eating areas available and the tip sheets for things like operating the TV, hiking areas, local restaurants, etc. are readily accessible. The kitchen is well stocked with clean, usable dishes/pots/glassware/etc. and the beds are very comfortable. We even spent one rainy morning just hanging out reading on the large covered porch and playing chess with the marble chessboard. You get the distinct sense that you are staying as a guest in bed & breakfast (instead of in a rental house with garage sale cast-offs which is sadly too common). We hiked a bit on the Appalachian Trail with our dog, accessible right from the property, as well as the Dragons Tooth trail which is a short drive away. All in all, we were very happy with our stay and will definitely return if our son decides to become a Hokie!
