Next, head to the Mont Saint Michel. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this exceptional headland is less than a kilometre in circumference. Take a detour to Mother Poulard’s house, the historic guest house for the mount’s pilgrims.

Fans of beautiful scenery and historic monuments will love the Petit Be Fort. Don’t forget your binoculars for making out the Tomb of Châteaubriand in the distance. Then, get your eye patch ready to set off for the Emerald Isle: your little pirates will love an expedition searching for precious stones.

Head back to the Mont Saint Michel bay to admire the dolphins and flamingos moving calmly against the swells of the tide. If you visit during the Spring equinox, you’ll witness the magic of the spring tides. Some settle down to watch this show from the top of the mount, whereas others prefer to be at one with the swells and climb on board a canoe-kayak.
