There’s no better way to spend a warm summer day in Milwaukee than in the bleachers of Miller Park with a brat in one hand and a High Life in the other. Throughout it’s nearly 50-year history, the Brewers have delighted fans with fantastic baseball and on-field fun. The Brew Crew have entertained the crowd with the likes of the Two-Fisted Slobber, Bernie Brewer, and the Racing Sausages—not to mention superstars like Hank Aaron, Robin Yount, and Rollie Fingers. To properly enjoy a game, follow these easy steps:
Founded in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots, the team quickly flew over to Milwaukee to relocate and become the Brewers. Before the Brewers came to town, the city had been home to professional teams, including the Braves until 1965, so Milwaukee was the perfect fit for the new team. 1971 saw the arrival of beloved broadcaster Bob Uecker, a former MLB player, almost-best-selling author, and star of TV’s Mr. Belvedere. The team had some ups and downs but acquired Hank Aaron in 1976, who began his career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1954, and fans were treated to his 755th and final home run. The Brewers were on the rise during the late ‘70s and finally made the MLB Playoffs for the first time in 1981.
The year 1982 looms large for lovers of the Brewers since that was their first and last appearance in a World Series. With Robin Yount at short, Paul Molitor on third, and Rollie Fingers, Don Sutton, and Pete Pete Vuckovich on the mound, the team was built for the postseason. Though they may have looked like they were competing in a mustache contest, the team stormed into the championship thanks to MVP and Cy Young Award performances. Unfortunately, the St. Louis Cardinals proved too formidable and ended up winning the World Series in 7 games with a devastating 3-run comeback in the final match. Since then, the Brewers have only appeared in the postseason twice, but they are typically in contention in their division with rival teams like the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Despite the fact that 2017 was seen as a rebuilding year, the team finished above .500 and fell just 1 game out of the playoffs. This year, Owner Mark Attanasio, General Manager David Stearns, and Manager Craig Counsell are gathering the best players in baseball and putting together a terrific team. Sluggers Ryan Braun and Eric Thames are teaming with pitchers Zach Davies and Chase Anderson for another thrilling season. Be sure to pick up an affordable Brewers ticket before they sell out—and always bet for the Polish Sausage to win the race!
The Brewers mascot is Bernie Brewer, a mustachioed man who slides down a slide into a giant beer mug in celebration of home runs.
The Milwaukee Brewers joined Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1969.
The Brewers home ballpark is American Family Field.
The name pays homage to the city's history of beer brewing and features a beer mug logo.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a loyal fan base known as the "Brew Crew," and the atmosphere at games is lively. Brewers home games also feature a sausage race, where fans dress up in sausage costumes and race around the field. It has become a popular tradition and even has its own Hall of Fame.
