Shoulder Season Trips
Escape the crowds
Do you wish summer could last forever? Soon, we’ll be packing up our beach towels and heading back to school and regular work schedules. But all is not lost. When summer ends, we begin one of the travel world’s most coveted times of the year: Shoulder season. Shoulder season is the window between high season and low season, which usually runs over September, October, and sometimes November, in some of the world’s best destinations. Many of the most seasoned travelers would argue that it’s even better than summer travel, as the prices tend to be lower and the crowds thinner. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite spots to visit during shoulder season so you can start planning now and extend your vacation season for a few more weeks.

1. Croatia
Americans and Europeans alike flock to Croatia for summer vacations, thanks to the country’s incredible beaches and national parks — so it obviously gets quite crowded, not to mention hot. Wait until September and early October to visit, and you’ll enjoy slightly milder weather and tourist attractions sans crowds. Note that many restaurants and hotels outside of the major cities close for the winter starting in late October, so plan accordingly.

2. Disney World
It makes sense that Disney World is a mad house during summer and around the holidays since that typically aligns with school breaks in the United States. If you wait until much of the country returns to school in September to plan your trip, you’ll be rewarded with hotel deals and better pricing at the parks. The best perk? Lines that won’t make you want to stomp your Mickey ears into the dirt.

3. Hawaii
Whichever island you choose, you’ll still find warm weather in Hawaii during the fall —but fewer crowds than during the summer and winter months. But the best reason to visit Hawaii in shoulder season is the lower prices. The cost of hotels and flights in September can be a fraction of what you would pay in January or February. And we say the more extra cash you have to spend on shave ice, the better.

4. Iceland
In the last decade, Iceland has become one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, as evidenced by the hordes of people that flock there in July and August. To appreciate the country’s waterfalls and hot springs without a hundred selfie-taking tourists blocking your view, plan your visit for the fall instead. The weather stays warm until early October, so you can still comfortably explore Iceland’s stunning outdoor attractions in relative peace and quiet. You might even have some room to stretch your arms out in the Blue Lagoon.

5. Mexico City
Mexico City is one of the best places to visit in North America, thanks to great food, architecture, and culture. The city sees a surge in visitors around the winter holidays, so the best time to visit could be in November (just note the Day of the Dead surge). This marks the end of the rainy season, and the weather is pleasantly cool (usually in the 50s and 60s), which is ideal for strolling around the city and filling up on street tacos.
