European cities to explore in fall

Barcelona, Spain

Visiting Barcelona in the fall will make you feel like you have the Picasso artwork and Gaudí architecture all to yourself. (You can even tour the Sagrada Família without many other tourists.) Another seasonal perk is the arrival of chestnut-roasting stands that start to pop up all around the city.

Bruges, Belgium

Easily accessible from London and Paris, Bruges is a must-visit city any time of the year. But it especially shines in the fall, when the canal-side trees begin to change colors, and you can warm up with local treats like waffles and frites. Take advantage of the lovely weather with a leisurely stroll through the fairytale-like Old Town, complete with cobbled alleyways and church spires.

Florence, Italy

It’s hard to beat the romantic vibes of Florence during the fall months. Not only do the trees reflect beautifully in the Arno River, but autumn also happens to be wine harvesting season in Tuscany—so there’s no better time to kick back with a couple glasses of chianti. If the temperature starts to drop, just head indoors to one of the city’s many (and we mean many) museums and shops. Nothing beats a day spent among Botticelli's paintings at the Uffizi Gallery.

Lisbon, Portugal

Enjoy Lisbon’s mild weather and picturesque streets with a fall visit. The temperate fall weather practically begs visitors to spend an entire day exploring the beautiful city on foot, winding through steep alleyways to find incredible panoramic views. There are tons of famous spots to stop by, including the Belém Tower, São Jorge Castle, and Commerce Square.

Prague, Czech Republic

The beauty of Prague comes alive under the golden glow of autumn. Take a stroll along the tree-lined Vltava River for some of the best foliage or head to one of the city’s many public parks for similarly lovely vistas. Wake up early to see the Czech capital under a shroud of misty fog — the cobblestoned streets and Gothic architecture look equal parts spooky and captivating before 7 a.m.
