Improving your travel experience
We’re making travel easier by giving you even more flexibility and the freedom to make your own choices when you fly with us.
Here’s what you can expect:
- No more change fees for all domestic and short-haul international flying on Premium Cabin and Main Cabin fares.
- Fly standby for free on earlier flights to the same destination on the same day.
- Customers who buy Basic Economy fares may now buy extras like upgrades, seats, priority boarding and same-day flight changes.
- AAdvantage® elite members may apply their travel benefits on all tickets, including on Basic Economy fares.
No more change fees
Effective immediately, we’re eliminating all change fees for First, Business, Premium Economy and Main Cabin tickets for all domestic and short-haul international flying.
We’re also waiving change fees on all tickets bought by December 31, 2020, regardless of fare type or itinerary.
Change fees will be waived
If you’re flying to these destinations:
- Any of the 50 U.S. states
- Canada
- Mexico
- Caribbean
- Puerto Rico
- U.S. Virgin Islands
And if you’re flying in any of these cabins:
- Main Cabin (except Basic Economy)
- Premium Economy
- Business
- First
If your travel plans change, you can keep the full value of your original ticket but will need to pay the fare difference if your new flight is more expensive. If your new flight is less expensive, you’ll get the fare difference in the form of a voucher to use on a future trip.
Example: If you paid $500 for your flight and change to a new flight that costs $300, you’ll receive a $200 voucher for a future trip.
The new change fee policy applies to AAdvantage® award tickets as well.
Fly standby for free
Starting October 1, 2020, you’ll be able to stand by for flights on the same day as your original departure to the same destination at no charge.
This includes domestic and international travel, regardless of the ticket you bought.
More to Basic Economy
We’re enhancing Basic Economy fares, keeping the same competitive low price, but also allowing you to buy extras for your travel experience on tickets bought October 1, 2020, and beyond:
- Upgrades
- Priority boarding
- Preferred / Main Cabin Extra seats
- Same-day confirmed flight change
Same AAdvantage® benefits no matter the fare
Starting this fall, AAdvantage® elite members will receive the same benefits they enjoy now no matter the ticket they buy, including Basic Economy:
- Priority access / Preferred boarding
- Upgrade privileges
- Elite seat privileges, including access to Main Cabin Preferred and Main Cabin Extra seats
- Same-day confirmed flight change
With this change, starting January 1, 2021, Basic Economy tickets will no longer earn Elite Qualifying Dollars, Elite Qualifying Miles or Elite Qualifying Segments toward future status.

Travel tips
Your safety and well-being is our top priority. If you’re traveling with us there are steps you can take to help prevent COVID-19 or other illnesses.
Don’t travel if you’re sick
Beginning June 30, we’ll ask all travelers during check-in to confirm they have been free of COVID-19 symptoms for the past 14 days. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick.
Eat before you leave
Food and drink service is limited in the Main Cabin and based on flight length and destination, and some airport restaurants may be closed.
Carry your own hand sanitizer
The TSA now allows you to bring up to 12 ounces of hand sanitizer in your carry-on bag.
Bring a face covering
It's required while flying on American, except for children under 2 years old. You're also required to wear one in the airport where your trip begins, where it ends and where you connect.
Download the American app
You can use the app to check in, pay for your bags, get your boarding pass and watch free shows on your flight.

Face coverings
A face covering is required while flying on American, except for children under 2 years old. If you decline to wear one, you may be denied boarding and future travel on American.
Keep in mind:
- You should bring your own face covering to use while traveling. While limited quantities of face coverings may be available at the gate, they will not be available for every customer on every flight.
- You’re required to wear a face covering from the time you enter the airport where your trip begins until you leave the airport where your trip ends.
- A face covering can be a mask or any secured cloth that covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under the chin.
- A face shield can be worn with a face covering, but not in place of one.
- Starting August 19, 2020, face coverings with exhaust valves or vents, or made with mesh or lace type fabric, will not be allowed.
- You can briefly take your face covering off to eat or drink, but you must put it back on when you’re done.
Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for more information.
