Immerse yourself in nature

While Azerbaijan is conveniently sized and home to all types of landscapes thanks to having 9 of the world’s 11 climate zones, the country is over 50% mountainous. The Greater Caucasus Mountains tower across the north, while the Lesser Caucasus cover the south-west and the Talish Mountains the south-east. Naturally therefore, opportunities for outdoor adventure abound, whether it be skiing in winter at one of Azerbaijan’s three resorts or hiking in warmer months between quaint mountain villages home to small ethnic groups with unique languages. You can also explore Azerbaijan’s sublime mountainscapes through birdwatching, rafting, paragliding, jeep tours, and much more.

Experience skiing in the Caucasus Mountains

Azerbaijan’s three ski resorts in the majestic Caucasus Mountains offer a spectacular change of scenery. The luxury mountain resorts at Shahdag and Tufandag in the north boast a great selection of slopes catering to both beginners and experts with friendly instructors and indulgent hotels. They are also very affordable and offer plenty beyond skiing with everything from wine tasting and spa treatments to hiking and historical tours. The newly opened Agbulag resort in Nakhchivan may be small but is a fantastic spot to feel the wild spirit of this naturally beautiful region and is conveniently close to the region’s capital. The ski season lasts from about late-December to mid-March.

Ancient, modern & multicultural

Art and culture transcends any trip to Azerbaijan, where ancient arts and crafts shaped by the Silk Road like carpet weaving, metalsmithing and mugham music are still practised with passion in almost every region. But there is much to admire here too for modern art lovers, not least the architectural marvel that is the Heydar Aliyev Centre. And there are superb museums to visit, such as the Museum of Modern Art and National Art Museum, as well as an ever-expanding range of galleries and theatres. Another legacy of the Silk Road is the incredible multiculturalism of this land, where Muslims, Jews, Christians and others live in harmony, each with their own monuments, museums and places of worship waiting for you to explore them.
