Visit Ko Panyi, an extraordinary settlement where locals have constructed everything, from homes and restaurants to a large soccer field, on top of the water. The serene village offers eye-opening insight into the ingenuity of people who live in unlikely places. Arrive in the heart of this floating community and meet the people responsible for it.
Once on the floating walkways that run through the town, marvel at the innovative construction which allows houses to perch on stilts rising from the water. Contrasting with the buildings’ colorful roofs are enormous mossy rock formations rising like giants beside the settlement. Take photos of the huge limestone bluff looming over the northern side of the floating village.
Stroll between the buildings and stop off at one of the restaurants, most of which serve fresh seafood and other Thai specialties. Browse the various markets and souvenir shops that have sprung up as the island has become a popular destination to visit.
Among the island’s highlights is the floating soccer field on its western side. Hear how it was built by soccer-crazy kids in the 1980s and garnered world-wide interest and praise after featuring in a TMB Bank commercial in 2011.
In the shadow of the limestone rock at the village’s northern end stands the glorious Panyee Mosque with its golden dome and elegant minarets. Watch the locals on their way to prayer and the nearby fishers at work. You can even stay the night at one of the guest bungalows on the island.
Ko Panyi is a tiny islet in the Phang Nga Province of southern Thailand. The settlement lies in Phang Nga Bay, beside Ao Phang-nga National Park. Explore the region and visit other attractions including Than Bok Khorani National Park, Sirinat National Park or Phuket Island.
