"Nice hotel with a beautiful courtyard"
The staff is very welcoming, and the room we booked for some reasons is not available, the person at the reception just uprated our room but keep the promising price we booked, also informed us clear that the hotel price does not include breakfast, and the price of the breakfast should we decided to use. A thoughtful map is giving upon our arrival. Both my daughter and I are vegans, we prepared some instant noodles in the case we can't find any vegan food to eat. The hotel kindly provide some hot water for us to the purpose. The hotel is beautifully arranged, with a very charming courtyard. A friendly cat stays in the hotel, and the first night, she followed us to our room, and stayed with us for a while. My daughter was so delighted, and still talks about her sometime. The location is very convenient; water bus line 42 or 52 from the Venezia S.L. train station to Fondamenta Nove, then look up the thoughtful sign on the corner of a building by the street, and follow the sign, in two minutes, we arrived to the hotel. The same water bus stops, we can get water bus to San Marco, Murano and Burano. P.S. There are many trains between Venzia S.L. and VE.Mestre at 1.25 Euro per person per ride. We were panicking on the night before we left Venice to find our early morning train was at VE Mestre not Venzia S.L., as there is not direct water bus to there. We would very grateful that a very kind young couple informed us about this as the reception was closed at the time.

Hotel Al Vagon

Cannaregio 5619 - Campiello Riccardo Sel, Venice - Map
"Much better than the one star rating suggests."
I stayed for one night at the Al Vagon with my family of five. It worked very well for us. Easy to find, this hotel is considerably better than its one star suggests. The room was in good shape, clean and their large quad room fit all five of us quite well. The air conditioning kept the room nice and cool on a warm July evening. The staff were friendly and helpful. It would recommend this hotel and stay there again.

Hotel Rossi

Cannaregio, Venice - Map
"Great location lousy breakfast."
The location is great, being on a quiet side lane. The rooms are modest and the service is adequate. The included breakfast consists of two rock hard buns and some jam but they do give you coffee. If you can get a discount for a room without breakfast, do so, because there are many really nice cafés in the neighbourhood.

Pocket Guide: Venice Cannaregio 1 star Independent Hotels

For visitors arriving by rail or by bus, Cannaregio is Venice’s front door and the start of the Grand Canal. It sees a lot of passing traffic in terms of canal boats and visitors en route to San Marco, but is otherwise quieter and less touristy than central Venice. Points of interest include the Ghetto area (the original Jewish enclave) with its museums and the majestic Ca d’Oro palace, one of the iconic buildings of the Grand Canal.
